First, a little bit about my situation. I'm currently a 24 year old FTM about to start transition. I'm looking at legally changing my name. However, I am on my parents' insurance (both health and car). They do not know about my transition and will not know because I plan to cut all contact with them when I am officially financially dependent in approximately one year due to past abuse. I really need to milk the insurance for what it's worth right now, mostly because I can't afford to pay monthly for my own insurance policy.

So my question is can I change my name and not change it with those insurance companies without too many issues? I've had a few friends tell me they were able to keep their birth names on their insurance to help with OB/GYN care and it's never been an issue, but I'm just curious if anyone else has had the same experience. As for the car insurance, my only worry is that if I change my name on the title, the name on the insurance not matching will be a serious issue. I can wait to change my name, but since I am starting T next week, I'm worried that as my physical transition progresses, my ID not matching could cause problems as well.

Hi Simsoharper, welcome to Susan's. You might try checking with the insurance as far as that goes. As far as the ID not matching how you look that can be a problem if they don't believe the person in the picture is you. I know when I went to change my name the notary at the bank had to see my old ID. I had to convince her I was the same person because she could believe the person pictured was me. It may may mean you have to share details with that person that you may or may not feel comfortable doing or update the ID with a new picture. I look forward to seeing you around the site. Good luck and Hugs.

Should not cause any issues. I didn't update mine on my mom's insurance, and that was fine. I didn't update my car insurance until recently, and they did not know that I had registered the car under my new name.

Just keep a copy of your court order for the name change on your person at all times. Fold up a copy and put it in your wallet. If you ever get into a situation involving your health insurance or car insurance after changing your name and updating your documents, having the court order will provide immediate clarification.
