I had a full hysto 12 days ago and my doctor who has no experience with transmen wanted me to discontinue my T therapy for 6 weeks post operatively for the blood clot risk. I dont have any prev history of blood clots in the past. I have been doing research and it seems like other guys in my position didnt have to stop T for that long post op. I really want to listen to my doctor but at the same time its giving me extreme dysphoric feeling of not being able to do my injections for that long of time. I want to start my T up today but I keep having second thoughts. I was just wondering how long you guys had to wait post operatively to start T again?

I had my full hysto + colpectomy a couple of months ago. I only had to go 9/10 days without T after surgery before I could start again. My surgeon has a lot of experience with trans guys as he is part of a transgender team that offers the full package (psychologists, hormones and surgeries) and he's a gynecologyst and an endo combined. I know there is a debate going on in the team if stopping is at all necessary right now. So all in all, 6 weeks seems a bit over the top. But then again, he is your doctor, and you should listen to your doctor at all times. If you are in doubt, get a second opinion from a trans experienced doc?

wkly1269, 6 weeks does seem to be a bit long for what other guys are instructed to hold off before starting.  I would think you could have hot flashes and other effects in that long a period.  May want to discuss with your surgeon again.

It may be possible that your physician believes you are already at an increased risk for blood clots without the Testosterone, and wants to minimize the chances of that occurring. A blood clot that travels to your lungs or brain can be deadly...I might err on the side of caution with that one.  That being said, my surgeon advised me to stay on my regular dosing schedule to avoid extreme hormone distress, and I formed no deadly clots.  People are all different and your doc likely has a good reason for the recommendation.  If you do not agree, seek an opinion from another doc, or at the very least, ask your doc to explain to you exactly why they recommend this course of action.

I was able to start my T soon after leaving the hospital. T increases the risk of blood clots. and my doc point blank said that my size is definitely a cause for concern. I did ok in the hospital so I was only off my T for a week. Listen to the doctor, its not worth your life

What is she going to do if you tell her? She can't do anything about it.

I've seen doctors refuse to provide treatment. T is a controlled substance and the doctor can say that you are abusing it by not following orders. If my doctor says no then I'm following what he says. My health is more important that injections.
