Right, so, I'm scheduled to visit my doc on June 29th to POSSIBLY get my first T injection.
I say possibly because I have no idea what this is gonna cost if my insurance doesn't cover it.
Since I am 17, not 18, I believe I have to get consent from my pediatrician - who's been a total ass to me and my family about my struggles with gender/sexual identity. When my Mom called his office the other day to explain that there was a plan for me to start HRT, the secretary said that my pediatrician may not agree to it and therefore it might not get covered. I have NO idea how this ->-bleeped-<- works.
I have Blue Cross Blue Shield as my insurance, and Dr. Michelle Forcier is my adolescent doc(she was on the Today show talking about transgender youth, if any of you remember that name).
I'm really REALLY anxious about all this.
What I want to hear from you guys is if you have Blue Cross + your HRT was covered, and what made them cover it.
Also, if you don't have coverage, how much did your testosterone injections cost??
My biggest fear is that we won't be able to afford the hormones, and I will ultimately be stuck T-less until... god, i dont even want to think about that.

I have BCBS. I pay $20 to see the doctor, ~$30 for blood tests quarterly, and $65 for 3+ months of T and syringes. I pay out of pocket for my T and syringes.

First, it's going to depend on WHICH BCBS policy you have. Will some cover T? Indeed. Mine does.

If you have it through work, be aware that just because you work in State A doesn't mean the policy is managed by BCBS of State A. I'm in Louisiana, and have a corporate policy through BCBS of South Carolina of all places. Corporations, if hey are big enough, can create their own "private" group bundles. However, if you do by some chance have BCBS of South Carolina, you're good to go with a gender marker of M. With a marker of F....it may depend. It costs me a whole $11 a month (T plus needles).

Your insurance may only cover certain amounts at a time. For example, instead of handing over a 10ml vial, they may only pay for a 1 month supply at a time. So depending on your dose they may pay for 2 smaller 1ml vials or 3 etc. Then just refill each month.

BCBS has some decent customer service, so I suggest calling the number on your card and straight up asking them.

If they WON'T cover it, T seems to run about $130 for a 10ml vial. (what gets called the big vial).
To be or not to be....that is the question
