Hi so I am 21years old MTF and have been on HRT for 2months now. I want to go full time already now that my school semester has ended. My mom knew this and even though she is supportive, she is saying maybe I should wait to develop more?! She said she read a book tht said girls transitioning too early comes back to bite them. This is horrible, I hate being a guy, I just cannot be my true self because I always put the guy cloak on when I'm dressed as a guy. I feel like if Im going to learn makeup, mannerisms, walking, voice, etc. Full time should help me with all this. I'm not going anywhere acting like a guy all the time. I do practice my voice every day, though it is not great at all, it is somewhat slowly progressing. Idk... What do you girls think? When did you start going full time? Sorry if I'm ranting, I just got my hopes let down by her today and feel upset.

When I started I wanted to be dressing regularly by 3 months. That didn't work out so well because hrt was slow. Near 7 months in I went full time because I had no job and the timing was good and I felt like I was hindering progress by not being out.

Anyway, going full time wasn't even really a choice. My breasts were too hard to hide, my voice was difficult to hide because I was working at it and going lower was difficult, and I could have drawn just as much attention dressed as a guy as I do as a girl.

I would suggest trial runs going out with a friend or friends dressed. I would also suggest building a wardrobe and makeup supplies for when you do decide to go full time. If you jump into full time without anything, expect lots of money to be spent. If you're not financially ready then buy fall clothes and plan for starting next semester full time.

I was on HRT for 3 years, and then went full-time after having FFS; but everyone is different, there's people on this site who have gone full-time before starting HRT, and they say that everything went well for them. Are you seeing a therapist?

I was seeing a therapist, though I havn't seen for  couple months since I had surgery for my orchiectomy, things were a bit hectic so I took a break. I plan to see my therapist again in about one month. I just had a talk with my mom too and I am going to go full time. She was just trying to be helpful. Btw you look amazing!

I was one of several Kitten is talking about who went full time before HRT and by a good couple months before HRT at that. It's not like a set out a particular date I was trying for or had any idea as to when it would happen because I didn't I started dressing more andro and switching things over. Over time adding pieces including the wig tell I was done. I let my mind, body, and soul determine when considering the type of work I do. If your not comfortable dressing as a guy then don't. You need to find what works for you. Consult your therapist and if you don't have one then getting one would really be a benefit to you. The gap between semesters is a great time to do it because you can start fresh with everyone when classes start again, but don't feel like you have to do it then either. For me it was need before, no matter who I looked. Others have different criteria as to when. Good luck and Hugs

Hi. So the bottom line is that you go full time when you feel ready for it... and what you mean by full time. For me full time meant legally changing my name (and identification papers, licence, bank accounts, etc), telling everybody and from that point on presenting as female. It really is a deep end approach, perhaps not sink or swim but you need to be sure you can paddle a bit at least. You're right, you learn a lot and you learn it quickly since you are essentially tipping yourself into lived female experience 24/7. While you could have days where you say, "meh, don't feel like the effort of making myself up today (or whatever)" that might not be a viable option. Being part time is easier from that point of view, you can be whatever mode you want/need to be.

I know some transwomen who have gone full time even before taking HRT or having electro, others wait a year or more on HRT before moving forward. Each to their own! A lot of it has to do with the need to move forward and how confident you feel with your appearance and presentation as a woman. When I tried to transition in the early 1990s (at around your age) I never felt overly confident, even though I looked quite feminine after two years on HRT - and so I pulled the plug on that attempt. This time I was on HRT for 9 months before I decided to go full time - during that nine months I tried to get rid of as much of my beard as possible and went out in a variety of settings in girl mode to build my confidence. Once I knew I was ready there was no holding me back.
