This thread can probably be posted on other boards, but I'm lost and confused trying to figure this out. I'm looking for surgeons in the midwest (preferably Ohio, Indiana, or Chicagoland area) who specialize in trachea shaves. I've looked around and the info I get is all over the place and not reliable enough. I need to know of surgeons who have done this procedure before and/or work with trans patients.

Abby maybe we should change the title of your thread to help you and then based on that move to another spot that might be more appropriate for it as a result. Often the title and location in the forums won't draw the crowd and response you need to get someone to respond. Thanks

I'm not sure what else you would title this thread. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

As far as where to put the thread, I'm not sure. I know the mtf subboard gets tons of traffic so I get the impression people either have no information in this region or there are no plastic surgeons in the midwest who work with trans patients.

You mentioned a particular procedure. I would think having that mentioned in the title and then the region being the Midwest and see what happens. Secondly I believe that procedure is part of FFS unless your having your pitch dealt with two in case VFS and those forums have people who don't go in this forum generally. If you decided to take me up on it I can do on all the work to make these changes for you. So your thread gets the attention from the those who could help most. Hugs

I've heard good things about Dr. Schechter.

Actually, now that I know he does surgery at Lutheran General, he should be my surgeon.  That way I could be born twice at that hospital. [emoji4]

I went to a regular reconstructive plastic surgeon and had the trachea shave and a nose job at the same time. A reconstructive plastic surgeon has a higher skill level but may charge a bit more as well. Mine favored leaving just a little bit in order to ensure he didn't damage the larynx and alter the voice. I did get rid of that boat keel and while the shave was what I wanted most, I like the nose far better. By the way, there is a very faint scar that people don't notice unless I point it out. If it bothers you, makeup would have little trouble covering it. If you have any more questions I can answer, let me know.

What was roughly the total cost for everything? Did insurance cover anything?

This is a procedure only ENT doctors and experienced FFS surgeons (who get training for this) should be trusted with. It's relatively safe procedure if they know what they are doing.. and very dangerous if they don't. If you're not willing to travel out to one of the surgeons who do FFS, you should check with a couple local ENT doctors.

Don't forget this was back in 1979 so you may have to multiply the cost by at least a factor of 3. The total came to about $2300 with something like $600 of that going to the trachea shave. Insurance cover some of the nose because there was blockage in the passages that I was never aware of. I became very much aware of it afterwards because I could walk at a fast pace and I didn't have to open my mouth for air.

You need to check your policy but if your reason is considered cosmetic, the insurance will not cover it.
