UCLA researchers to lead study surveying U.S. transgender population

I was hoping to see the results.

I think the numbers that come from this sort of thing greatly depend on how they define transgender. Someone who questions their gender? Someone who clearly identifies as a gender different from their birth sex? Someone who has taken steps to transition? Someone who is living full-time? All of these categories will have vastly different numbers.

While I admit I and countless others use the word transgender to describe as being a mtf or ftm or something close to that, the fact here is, transgender is an umbrella term (Thankfully) which includes intersex people too amongst others. So really any survey needs to have multiple categories along with a final one for those who don't wish to disclose which one of the many types of people they are and simply wish to answer I'm transgender or I do know someone who is transgender being a second last option. Either way it will be interesting to see the results, that's for sure but let's be honest, they'll never get a real accurate number because of many of us being in the closet or our "families" not willing to admit it and such.

It seems like a great study to have done.

However, I am not sure if I was polled how I would answer right now. I am out to about 4 people plus 3 websites. My children do not know and I would worry that the home phone and/or mailbox might get traffic that could be confusing to them. When I am more socially out I would answer fully true. However, right now, my decisions effect my family.

If I am in this predicament, I am curious what percentage of our community will be invisible.
