Ashely, I'll assume that you live in the US. You need get the right paper work from your court house. File a petition and you will need to get it notarized after that file it with the clerk and you will get a case number. And depending on the judges work load you might wait a few weeks for the judge to hear your case. And you just attend your hearing and if everything goes will your name is changed. This is the basic outline, some of the stuff can very state by state. So my best advice is to look up your state laws online and you should get most of your questions answered.

This information is very important to transitioning people. I also have all of the state name change forms on my computer so if you can't find what you need, let me know and I'll be glad to send you what you need.  I am not an attorney and my information should never be used to substitute or circumvent the advice of counsel. I am, however, a friend of the court and advocate for all types of people's issues. I have been for years. It's only recently that I've finally made the decision to come out myself and  in the process, help others as I try to find my place in the LGBT community. I joined this site several weeks back but server problems at work and then a well-needed vacation took me away from these boards. Now pay close attention to what I'm about to say. *smile* it is vitally important to keep an eye and ear on case law regarding virth certificates and  gender change related to assignment of gender at birth. These laws are almost changing on a daily basis. It is also highly likely that a pivotal Supreme Court ruling will be issued this month in the consolidated same-sex marriage cases. There was discrepancy in the 10th and fifth circuit courts as well as division in other courts across the nation regarding the  definition of marriage under the provisions of equal protection and due process. This is why I believe the U.S. Supreme court chose to handle this issue in the way they have. An unprecedented number of Amicus briefs were accepted to support argument on this issue. I am writing a post for the legal forum that I will submit in just a little bit that reviews my observations, thoughts and feelings about this upcoming ruling which will either be a major stepping stone for LGBT rights or a stumbling block to progress. I believe that the "shifting majority sentiment" of the  nation will be reflected in the court opinion and that the court will rule favorably on behalf of proponents of marriage equality. I hope so. But, predicting how the court will rule is as dangerous as trying to predict how a jury will vote.

Most states do it via the courts. You file a name change petition. Most states also require public notification such as a newspaper ad.
