Most of us have probably heard about the research by Dr Atala, whose goal i believe is to turn ovaries into testes and vice versa. Keeping this in mind, i want to have bottom surgery. However, i would like to keep my ovaries for this purporse. I would love to be able to create my own testosterone. I have also heard that once you have these parts removed you can die if you dont have hormones, which i find rather unsettling. So i would like to know if i could have a vaginectomy and hysterectomy (with metoidioplasty and scrotoplasty) and keep my ovaries, or if they'd die.

That is my ideal surgeon as well. May I ask what the total cost will be? Also did Dr. Crane say anything about the ovaries? Thankyou

The ability for us to take ovaries and turn them into testosterone producing testicles will not happen in our lifetime.  I wouldn't make plans around that idea.

I haven't actually heard about this. Is there a link I can click to read more about it. It would take many years for this to happen most likely but it sounds interesting.

There are a lot of ciswomen who have their ovaries removed for any number of reasons.  My housemate had hers removed several years ago and she's still alive.  She did go through a short amount of time where she said she felt like a robot, just emotionless, and was briefly suicidal until her doctor prescribed some oestrogen tablets.  So I doubt just removing the source of sexual hormones would kill anyone, especially when it comes to transmen who are supplying their own hormones via injections, creams, gels, patches, etc.

This does sound very interesting, although I think it would be much easier if biologists would find a way to clone a penis and testicles using a trans man's own tissue samples.  A Build-A-Cock workshop, if you will.  Create a cock.  Harvest.  Put patient under.  Slice and dice.  Connect the appropriate nerves and blood vessels.  Suture and glue.  Shove Percocet down throat.  Allow time for healing.  Introduce trans man to hand lotion, tissues, and adult videos.  Wait.  Log results.  Make adjustments where needed.  Try and try again until you get it just right.  Celebrate with pizza, ice cream, and beer.  Repeat.

And yes, I do believe this can and will happen.  They're probably working on it right now, as we speak, in some underground laboratory.  Blokes are so hung up about being hung, you know they're working hard to perfect penis processes.  Guys lose their genitals all the time because we're stupid and do stupid things with our willies.  Then you have some guys that are born with misshapen or defective genitals.  Loads never quite develop their junk and are self-conscious about it.  Then there are many who are just peeved that Mum and Dad allowed some git to mutilate their tools at birth via circumcision.  [I know I would be pissed!]  So there are a hundred reasons why this needs to be funded, and reason #101 is so that trans men can finally attain their true forms.

That, and I think it'd be hilarious to slap someone in the face with my junk.

About that...

Early on in a fetus's life, it will become male or female. In a female, the future ovaries stay where they are, while in a male, they become testes and a ligament slowly helps them migrate down into the scrotal sac. Once born though, I don't know if the ovaries could effectively produce a hormone they were not meant to produce. They are also smaller than testes, and I think you might be unhappy with the size.

Right now, we are still in the step of trying to get other people to accept us for our true gender. Until that can be done, there won't be a lot of grant money available for research on the topic.

  As an MTF I'm of course hoping for the opposite.  The concept of 'reprogramming' the reproductive organs is quite interesting.  No idea if it's possible or if they're gonna have to grow new one's from scratch in the lab using your own donor cells.  Given what they're already creating in terms of replacement body parts this may actually happen first.  That raises the bizarre spectre that it may become possible for you to have both testes and ovaries if you actually wanted that, not to mention the seemingly far-fetched idea of self-insemination!  (I realize hormone balance could prevent keeping both viable permanently.)  I mean, is there really anything to stop science from using stem cells to grow brand-new ovaries complete with fertile eggs?  Aren't they already taking viable donor eggs, sucking out the contents, and then putting new DNA inside?  Who's to say they can't grow full-functional new testes which produce viable sperm too?  One way or another I think I'm going to see reproductive 'miracles' on this scale in my lifetime, although probably too late for me to benefit from them.

I wish this were being looked at seriously but it seems the research that was conducted has ceased and there are no plans to look into how it could work in humans. Depressing because a lot of us want to have children and for myself transitioning includes hysto since T damages ovaries and causes cysts...

Well, if only people really looked into advanced genetic engineering ..
In genetics/biology, in the DNA of cells, aren't certain genes turned "on/off"? As in, a red blood cell is composed of say the same DNA as a cell of a lung's wall. So that red blood cell has the information for a lung cell, it just has that gene of the DNA turned "off".

I took Honors Biology this year and I tried to simplify something that I learned which was already quite simplified. Thoughts?

ITs honestly better for you to think of it this way and do not make plans about it!! I know minimal biology BUT this is unlikely to happen HOWEVER currently you can freeze eggs and have kids that way. And soon you'll be able to have artificial sperm which will be wiped of DNA and have yours "re-written" into it.

These doctors are probably being theoretical at best, and ive honestly never heard of either (but i am british). The entire concept would  have to revolve around your ovary DNA cell make-up being placed on a scaffold of some sort and then having surgery to attach your lab-made balls.

Ovaries at your age have already matured and released eggs, unless there was a way to make them revert back to foundation phase ie what a newborn has then and only then would it start to look remotely possibly.

If you could get this done it would cost you more than life itself. It would honestly be easier and cheaper to clone yourself but with male parts and transfer those parts across.

Actually looked this up. Its called Somatic Sex Reprogramming. It does work (in mice) BUT they havent been able to create sperm and the ovaries are in the wrong position but they do change and pump out testosterone. No human trials yet the latest update was 2011, 4 years of quiet isnt a particularly good thing but oh well.

Its actually how fish and asexual organisms change sex etc. It doesnt appear to work in reverse apparently its coded into XX chromosomes and the ovaries are literally the only thing in a humans body stopping you from turning male.If you take out one gene youd become male...apparently.

I really hope it happens in our lifetimes. I'm trying to get srs plans aligned right now and I wish the procedures were better, though I will settle with what I think is right in the end. I was thinking of removing everything, now I'm questioning the ovar(y/ies). But have a family history of endometriosis, so I question if that could make it worse to keep. Wish I knew more about that.
