Hi, I'm new to all this basically I don't know how to go about it all and id like to know the first steps to transitioning. I strongly believe that I am a male in a females body. How do I go about bringing this up to my GP?

Be straightforward about it. If you are truly ready to take the necessary steps then you should be able to talk about it with confidence.

Really depends where you're located as far as what they can do for you right off the bat, and what exactly you want from them to start. But stating it just like you did here is fine.

Most people here tend to start with a mental health professional, as most medical doctors will not work with you without a referral from a therapist of some sort, unless you find someone who does informed consent. You'll still need referrals for surgical procedures if that's a route you intend to go down, so forming a relationship with a therapist is a good thing to do early on.

Here and in the link there are a few resources and thoughts that might help you:
https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,191620.msg1708270.html#msg1708270

Well I'd say take the time you need but keep at it...
its a process, simply take it step by step...
but remember many, many people have done this all successfully...

you might tell the area where you are from, for example in the UK there are different resources...

Hi fernswift, welcome to Susan's. How to start is a familiar question. To some extent, it depends on where you are. It can also depend on how well you are informed about the whole process. Coming here is a great way to learn about the process and steps to take. Often starting with a therapist can be useful.

Here are some links to site rules and answers to often asked questions.

Hi fernswift0, welcome to Susan's. As LordKAT mentioned it greatly depends on where you are at. Often it includes seeing your doctor and a therapist. I look forward to seeing you around the forums Good luck and Hugs

Any GP that abides by their Hippocratic Oath will be more than willing to offer you assistance. When I told my GP that I was interested in starting HRT she seemed almost more excited than I was. If your GP is not receptive to your requests or questions, you should consider seeing a GP who is.

Having said that, I concur with ftmax, that it is a very good idea to see a mental health professional, which your GP may recommend to you.

Then after that, fill your life with all of the magnificence that being trans brings! :D

Big welcome to Susan's Fernswift

I told a GP, well after years of keeping it inside me, I just blurted it all out, my emotions just overtook me! Wasn't hard, just seemed it up front. Best thing is be honest, be yourself, tell why and how long you have felt the way you do.

As far as first steps... probably have a good look around our site here, then try and get some time with a gender therapist/counsellor... they will help you with your journey. As far as a GP goes, they will also be able to help you get the basics sorted, as long as they have some experience or contacts into Gender practitioners.

Best wishes and good luck.. also look forward to seeing you about the forum's
