So, I have been waiting months to see some one at the U of MN Center for Sexual Health and finally I got my call to schedule intake. Yay! I was so excited and happy to finally get in. Have them my insurance info and may appt. Is coming up next week. Everything is great except... my insurance doesn't cover any transgender services. Specifically. Now I am sad and I have no idea how to proceed. I haven't cancelled yet but I'm going to need to cough up some money. Lots of it. I guess I expected some rough sailing but not this soon.

Is your insurance through your work, or private?

If it's through work, your best bet is to talk to your HR department.  You'll need to come out to them anyways, assuming you plan to walk all the way down this path and not just peek around the corner for a second.    They can look into adjusting the coverages of your plan.

If it's private insurance, you'll need to call your insurance company and talk about adding coverage.

All insurance companies should have some appropriation for transgender services now, it's just a matter of making sure it's not carved out of your plan.

Hey Kristin,

I used to live in Dinkytown near the U of MN and fondly remember that "West Bank" era too.  Insurance companies are far less fun.  Too many have an exclusionary "rider" that specifically discriminates against us as a class of people with medical needs.  Totally unethical and wrong while some states have insurance commissions and/or existing laws that prevent such abuses.  I hope you will not be deterred but will read the fine print, ask about specific coverage for HRT and SRS and help push some corporate responsibility up hill.  Medication can be found at reduced prices on line.  Hang in there!

I'm afraid I'm in for more discrimination. Minnesota is a fairly liberal state too, but I guess. I'm going to see if I can reschedule for an appointment further out so I have a little more time to save up.
