Hello ,

I would like to ask anyone who can share their knowledge and experience about changing name and gender markers in the European Union . can it be done in any country and , if so , which one would be the most convenient choice .

I live in Romania , and in here it is very difficult to do it . It takes years and a lot of money just to change the name . Yet i heard a few times that because there is an Union i can change  them in other country too .

Thank you in advance

There is a map and index on trans rights accross EU which gives the outline - it can be found on the web-site of the TGEU (the European-wide transgender rights NGO)

There is also a comprehensive study made by the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) - Being trans in the EU. Here is the link to comparative analysis and their web-page contains the PDF version of their book as well.

As far as if You are allowed to change Your gender marker in another state, I seriously doubt it, because it is usually done by Civil Status registry which contains all data about Your birth. I have read about people working and residing in one member state and having to travel to the country of their citizenship in order to change or update their documents.
