Hey all,
Are there any trans support groups in the Nottingham area that anybody has attended?
For some reason I thought that because the nhs has a gender clinic here that it would be really active with lgbt and trans groups.
Any information would be great, thanks girls! X

Welcome back to the UK Alyssa. Where were yoy before?

Sadly I cant help you directly as I'm not in Nottingham, although it has a place in my heart because back in the mid 1980's I did one of my few television appearances at Lenton Lane studios. Mostly I worked behind the cameras, or in radio, but this was a rare appearance. I nearly came to Nottingham a couple of years back as they were one of four UK medical schools who made me an offer of a place to train for medicine, which I am now doing, but sadly I opted for a London school instead. I am therefore broadly familiar with Nottingham and I'm sure you'll find your feet soon enough.

I have to say I transitioned and had my SRS way back (over three decades ago) when the current fad for support groups wasnt yet there. My own experience, coupled with some involvement as a mentor on a couple of occasions is that they can be a mixed blessing. If you have a good medical team, and a supportive family you may find that its better to be a lone wolf. That way you avoid being ghettoised, and suckkered into repeating other people's mistakes.

Looking back i'm very glad that history forced me to do it my own way - and of course you have susans here.

So welcome and good luck.

Hiya Alyssa!! xxx

I'm studying at Nottingham Trent at the moment so I've been looking in to this as well!! There's a group called Nottingham Chameleons that meet up on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month. Sadly I haven't been able to attend yet but hopefully I'll be able to some time this year!!

There's also a website with a forum, it's pretty quiet but everyone seems nice and welcoming  :)

Hopefully I might see you there some day!! :P

You could try the Nottingham LGBT network.
They offer advice on everything LGBT from support groups to social venues, their switchboard number is 01159348485

If anyone needs to find a local group do a search for LGBT "insert town here" each local council should hopefully have a webpage for LGBT groups locally.

Thanks for the advice girls.

Rejennyrated: I was in Saudi Arabia for what seemed like forever. That's a really good point you make about lone wolfing it. I kinda didn't think about Susans as a support group but that makes a lot of sense.

Laura thanks for the link it was really useful and I checked out a few of the sources.

Sophie Hannah Alexis: OMG can't believe there is someone else so close. My sister studied fashion at N'ham Trent and settled down here, now my whole family is here! How do you like the uni? I am loving the area so far and having a great time- also I am amazed there is another trans Muslim sister, I felt like the only one ;D Yay

Jane thanks so much for the switchboard number, I'm gonna give them a call ASAP!
