School officials in Laramie are considering adopting a policy to address the needs of transgender and non-gender conforming students.

"The proposed policy is designed to ensure student safety, said Mike Hamel, assistant superintendent of human resources and quality learning for Albany County School District No. 1.

"We want to make sure that we're not discriminating against anybody, whether it's students or staff, based on any protected categories," he said. "And that's not necessarily listed as a specific protected category at this point in time, but nonetheless, we want to make sure that all individuals feel safe and comfortable in our schools."
