OP own words:This post is a follow-up to an article last year describing autologous grafting of laboratory-grown vaginas in females with congenital defects that required vaginal reconstruction. Bottom line:  It is now possible to for MtF transsexuals to have a self-lubricating mucosal membrane in neovaginas created by the penile inversion technique.  The cells are taken from the buccal lining of the mouth.  It isn't identical to an actual female vagina, but it's one step closer.

Abstract: Summary: Various vaginoplasty methods in male-to-female transsexuals have been described, but none is ideal.  The use of cultured autologous oral epithelium to cover the neovagina walls is presented.  Six patients were operated on.  Complications encountered were one case of low-located rectovaginal fistula that was treated conservatively; one case of partial glans necrosis resulting in a scarred but sensitive clitoris; one case of large labia majora requiring redn.; and one case of short vagina requiring surgical revision with autologous cultured oral cells that was successful.  All patients had adequate vagina, experienced sexual intercourse, and were satisfied with results.  Autologous cultured oral epithelium transplantation is feasible, safe, and advantageous.  Satisfactory neovaginas were provided; the procedure is relatively easy to perform and provides a thin, mucosa-lined neovagina with a sufficient
amt. of secretion.

How long should it take for this to become a common practice in GRS. When I get GRS, I want to be self-lubricating, but getting a piece of intestine removed to do so seems kind of extreme. Would be possible to this on women are already post-op?

Shure, much like using colon technique vaginoplasty for revision surgeries today.

At this point I'm calling it.  In 10 years we'll have a nano-bot hive system that can increase/reduce bone mass based on educated estimates on how hormones may have effected a transgender patient, allowing them to have a body that better matches their identified gender.

Unfortunately, in my work as a medical research librarian I've seen this kicking around since at least 2011; I don't think anyone should hold their breath. (Though it *would* be amazing!)

Incidentally, plenty of women self-lubricate with the current techniques...

Well for what its worth one of my friends and surgical colleagues (James Bellringer) does a lot of the UK surgery. I spoke to him about this... his view was that sadly it was not the golden result that it was supposed to be. There were longterm complications that developed and which were not noted in that paper. So his view was that he would not carry out this procedure. However he did tell me about other work that he and others are doing which has broadly the same aim, via a different technique, so while I suspect this one may not fly, there are other advances in the works. Cell culture is a powerful technique and we have only just begun to exploit it... watch this space.

Laura : Oh, I wasn't actually saying it wouldn't happen. I was saying it won't happen SOON. If it's pushing five years since this idea was out there, clearly progress is slow and application to trans women even slower. Personally, I decided I wanted a vagina immediately rather than wait for this to develop enough to be of use to me, and that was three years ago now.

Others with more medical expertise have addressed the fact that adapting it to trans women in specific would require an additional level of complication, and it's not even beyond the tentative experimental stage with cis girls, so my feeling is that it'll be quite a few more years before we see this technique available to us (if it is at all, since Jenny is now suggesting it might not work after all).

Gay marriage is actually a good comparison to me, because I also would not have suggested that someone who had the right to marry 10 years ago now in Massachusetts wait years and years to find out whether it'd be accepted nationwide; there's an opportunity cost to waiting, too. It means going without "good enough" for indefinite years waiting for "perfect." In both situations, people will judge the risk/benefit ratio differently, but in both cases it would have been foolish to assume that the "perfect" option would be available in a year or two.

        God I hope you are right. When I was very young I daydreamed about being able to have an injection or something and waking up a year later having grown 'naturally' into the person that I should've been.

There does appear to be some hope for FtM parts as well since they're testing lab grown penises.

This article has been the most interesting for me however. There are a few lines that sound pretty promising, like: "But researchers have already discovered how to tell ovaries to become testes." If that's the case then it'd be interesting if they could pump out their own hormones rather than needing them from external sources. Also, "We're also making progress at creating 'artificial' ovaries, and stem cells have been successfully used to give rabbits larger penises."

The article was from 2011, so there's been awhile since then. What I'd most like to see is a 3D printed vagina or a donated vagina washed in a detergent to leave only the extracellular matrix and lined with someone's own stem cells to create a properly functional vagina in all respects.

It is a little worrying though with the knowledge that testes could potentially one day be made to become ovaries because if removed, as tends to be the case with SRS, then it seems like that would no longer be possible.

I'm all seriousness though it is great what strides are being taken with this new medical technology and I just hope I'll still be here when it becomes possible for a MTF to bear children.
