"A transgender prisoner at Rimutaka jail has been transferred to women's facility, Rimutaka Prison director Chris Burns confirmed today.

Jade Follett was serving time in the men's facility since June after being sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment for stabbing a man who stalked and threatened her.

Members of the group No Pride in Prisons started a hunger strike today in a bid to get Follett moved to a women's facility, pointing to evidence from a 2007 study showing trans women were 13 times more likely to be sexually assaulted in a men's prison than other prisoners."
