Hey,

I am newbie to make up. So far I hoped second laser on my face will finally give me some air but it is being postponed because I got burned on the first treatment. Remaining patches of facial hair only make it worse as it is all uneven. There is no light on the horizon. It is going to be months long agony before next treatment.

So................................. I need to get my hands on make up.

But it is so hard to get a good starting point. I began browsing youtube vids, found one where girl speaks confidently about using plain foundation straight away on her face and that's it... but doesn't there have to be primer on the top of moisturizer too? I think so, so I dropped investing time in vids after that one.

So, I opened this subforums in hope to find a sticky topic with some info but nothing. So...

Here is my plan. I would like first to know what are all major items used for make up works, just to have them as a list as starters. Also major brands. Then to give descriptions, ways of use, dis/advantages of each. And some mainstream ways to combine them.

Finally, some web tools would be useful e.g. that can take your pic, and recommend palettes. And such.

Since I have to do this for myself, I can participate, but would appreciate help starting to work on the above.
I am at building the lists, and other info gathering.

Hugs

Hi, I think the first thing anyone should buy is foundation (with spf) there are so many products you can use that are not essential.

If you are young and have perfect skin then BB cream on it's own is all you will need.

Most important thing about foundation is that it matches your skin, you can keep buying them till you luck it, it can get expensive or go to a proper make up store and have them match your skin (recommended) and even then maybe you go get your makeup done at mac, buy the foundation then find out you get breakouts and have to go to another store and try again.

buy a good brush set, you will never regret that, no one looks good using their fingers.

normal day for me is, nude by nature mineral powder and inglot eyeliner

if I want to look good, then nude by nature liquid foundation, then nude by nature mineral powder, inglot eyeliner, napoleon mascara, natural lipstick

The next one I don't do much, is more for photoshoot or night time events. I just look out of place with my makeup at this level were I live.

Mac prep & prime, mac liquid foundation, inglot contouring and highlights, blush, inglot eyebrow filler, loreal (only because I don't have better, but they are quite nice)  eyeshadows, use about 4 of them, inglot eye liner, false eyelashes, napoleon mascara, lip liner , plumping lipstick, lip gloss, and finish it all off with Krylon setting powder

I had my makeup done for a wedding, so asked a million questions, took photos of all the products she used, took me months to go to all the stores and get stuff matched to my skin, also went and had make up done at mac store and got tips from them.

Most stores you can pay for a makeup session then they take the price of the session off any products you buy.

I understand it's pretty intimidating for those in transition or that still have facial hair, but high end store I went to had guys and gals working in them and they all had makeup on, I don't think they would judge anyone.

I'm always learning, and there's still so many things I could add, like eyelid primer. I just watch the youtube videos.

I'm friends with a hair dresser also so I've been buying salon quality straightners and dryers, and learning about blow waves, heat sprays, 7 day treatmeants, argon oil , delron and ceramic brushes and trying to get good at that. If you can walk out the door on your own with close to salon hair and professional makeup then your doing pretty good.

I tend to take the side of caution with makeup, better to look a bit subtle then ending up looking like marilyn manson or pennywise.

If anyone has a question I can try to answer, but I'm sure some of these young folk are much better versed at makeup than I am.
I will touch a 100 flowers and not pick one.

Hi. And thank you for stopping by.

Not that young girl here. ;) I'm 32 now, and my profile doesn't tell a lie.

Figured that one. I got myself a whole pretty collection of foundations in attempts to figure out one that would match. But...

... I neglected to use the brushes.

So, this evening I gave all those foundations a test. It turned out that many of them are just horrible bright. One was horribly dark I think. What I found out however is...

- Natual Beige color (Giordani Gold Age Defying Foundation) is about right but a shade too dark
- Light Ivory color (Giordani Gold Invisible Touch Foundation) is also about right but shade too light

Will have to play with them, either pick one, or play Houdini mixing them, but would really appreciate a wider palette so I can pick a color that is just right. So...

I heard word 'mac' before. So will have to look up what that is. (not a question, will take care of it, thanks) Of course I go out, I just have that profound feeling I look like a crowscare compared to what a pro make up job would allow. And there is one single thing this crusade is about --

Even thought two samples seem to ~match my skin, the patches of beard that remained after first laser session are still visible under the foundation. Next laser session is far away due to complications. Do you happen to have any suggestions what should I look for to conceal that facial hair? :(

I seldom wear foundation, as it is bothersome to wash my face with foam cleanser every night. I think you have relatively fair facial skin, and you may wear just sun cream everyday, which I do every day.  Currently I use Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen EX: http://top10inaction.com/shiseido-anessa-perfect-uv-sunscreen-ex-review/

After applying sun cream, I wear eye makeup such as eye shadow and mascara. It takes less than 5 min. For some occasional events, I wear lipstick, but it is soon erased as I smoke and drink coffee a lot. One of my favorite long lasting lipstick is Shiseido Perfect Rouge.

These are all of my makeup I wear every day.

I never was able to grow facial hair (androgen deficiency) but I do have a couple of troublesome spots, ones a 1 inch cut scar over a sunspot, if I put concealer on it the colours don't look quite right, in the end I found the good makeup like mac which is (buildable) covers it without the need for concealer. The other thing I can suggest is trying a loose powder foundation that you put on with a kabuki brush, you can get really good coverage putting that on top of foundation.

I had a rough youth so I have a few scars on my face so I don't go out without at least some makeup on.

I will touch a 100 flowers and not pick one.

Time to revisit this.

I went to a mac cosmetics store and met a nice guy who had shown me what make up can do for me. Still a beginner, but I can already pass with my own make up. It is like little to no clocking. With his artwork, it was just no clocking at all... until it started flaking about 8 hours later. So it was a big step for me to confirm once my facial hair is gone it is going to be one step into heaven.

One note, I don't intend to wear make up every day. I also want to move away from it once the hair is gone. It is a temporary solution.

Here is my current routine...

- Thorough cleaning
dry it well
- Moisturiser
- the "eye bag cream"

wait 5 mins.
- the "stuff around eyes" concealer
wait 1 min.
- primer / prep
wait 1 min.
- beard and stuff concealers...
- studio fix stuff
- foundation
- bronzer
- lip stick and lip liner
- eyebrow set

good look in the mirror as that is the best chance to making any amends

Some of the items, like eyebrow set I would use later too because I have dark hair but present as blonde.

Would you do these things in a different order? I made my own as I couldn't exactly remember what was the 'teachers' original order.

order seems good, finishing powder would make it last longer. I love the dark eyebrow and blonde look, I make my eyebrows darker on purpose

You could begin for example with a nourishing product for your face. This could give you a well kept look.

Some use plant oil based like jojoba (unless allergic) . It might take some time to soak in.
Just watch how it reacts with other makeup.

You could add a light eyeshadow later, or some kind of unobtrusive chapstick. (I'd recommend organic... also because of possible digestion).

Well you could do a few things with hairstyle... bangs for example over the forehead might help.

Eyebrows make a big part...
you could have them shaped, which many say is best, or take it slow and look up how to trim and shape a female form.
You might trim from the underside first to give a lift optically.
Do this slowly, and look at the results often.
Don't overdo it (otherwise it might be necessary to use a pencil for example).
You also might do this step by step over time.

You could look up a vid called "Plastic Surgery With MakeUp Fuller, Bigger Lips", its possible to do this with two lipsticks in unobtrusive colours.
A few minutes and its done... I'd recommend organic, two lipstick and a pencil.

I see. Here it is the opposite...  I'd like having all blonde characteristics, and a pale skin please.

Once I am comfortable with the current setting, perhaps around December this year or so, I will try to get lenses for gray eye color. I *hope* I won't need make up by then.

Any side effect of alcohol?

The sunscreen does not have any reactive element that can cause rash or eruption in the skin.

Ingredients
Apart from hyaluronic acid, the Shiseido Anessa sunscreen lotion has certain hydrocarbons, such as Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Alcohol, Cyclomethicone Dimethicone, Polybutylene Glycol or PPG-9/1, Polymethylsilsesquioxane Copolymer, and Ethylhexyl ethylhexanoate. The entire composition is blend in required amount of water and glycerin. There is no harmful chemical substance in the lotion that can change the skin pigmentation. However, the lotion does not allow hyper-pigmentation that is caused when direct UVA/UVB rays fall on the skin. There are also useful traces of zinc oxide which helps to keep the skin healthy when using a typical SPF-based sunscreen.

I don't think I've ever seen SPF 50 before, haven't seen SPF 40 either, and I live in a place with no ozone and a giant laser for a sun that gets over 45c in the summer.

Oh. Thanks for the links. I though alcohol is always beneficial to skin, but it is not the case.
I have to reconsider the trade-off between protecting from UV and side effect of alcohol.

it's not merely a side-effect, considering how much sunscreen you should wear a day (all day), and that this product is saturated with alcohol... it's like bombarding your skin with irritation
I love Hada Labo whitening UV SPF50, the most exquisite texture I have ever come across and i probably tried 40/50 sunscreens so far

I also use the following toner every day, and it seems that it also contains alcohol:

Of course!

Skin care is like diet, it's about habits, it doesn't matter if you have kale once a month, neither does it matter if you eat a pile of cake in that same frequency, it's about consistent use of well formulated varied products, and if you have alcohol every day in 2 of your products DAILY, that's an overkill

and remember, PILE SUNSCREEN ON :) neck and face! and chest!

I personally advise anyone to watch Paula's choice Livechats on youtube, thanks to them and especially Mr Bryan Barons I'm a skincare jedi now LMAO

Here is my current full set of things done, with exact product names. Omg, this list intimidates myself!

Warn: the colors suit my skin tone, you might need different colors.
Warn: I probably should do the concealers between the foundation and the studio fix powder, but I do not bother change the routine.

Cleanup:
1. Apply to whole face a mix of a foaming gel (Oriflame Optimals, foaming gel 25260) mixed with a face scrub wash gel (Oriflame Pure skin, scrub face wash, 20194). The second is abrasive one.
2. Use one of those cleansing systems where brush rotates and massages the face
3. Wash off in water and then keep moving face under water stream for next minute; make sure the temperature is comfy
4. Dry the face with towel and wait 2 mins.

Care:
1. Toner -- Optimals soothing toner for dry/sensitive skin, 26001
2. 'the eyebag stuff' -- Oriflame Bioclinic circulation eye power accelerator, 23381
3. Wait 2 mins.
4. Moisturizer, whole face -- Oriflame True Perfection day moisturizer, 30871 (day care, the night one is 30872)
5. Face Serum, whole face-- Oriflame True Perfection, 30873
6. Wait 5 mins.

Make Up:
1. Primer loosely dispersed across the face, MAC Natural Radiance Base Lumiere (could not find code)
2. Wait 2 mins.
3. Eye Concealer -- Mineralize concealer, NW20; dispersed with brush MAC 252
4. A layer of concealer to facial hair -- Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35, NW20; dispersed with brush MAC 286
5. Another layer of concealer to facial hair -- Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35, NW25; dispersed with brush MAC 286
6. Wait 2 mins.
7. Across whole face -- Mineralize Foundation SPF 15, NW20; using sponge
8. Across whole face -- Studio Fix N4, powder; using sponge
9. Lipstick, MAC viva glam IV, A94
10. Lip pencil, MAC A25
11. Correct areas around lips with the sponge from step 8
12. Wait 2 mins.
13. Bronzer -- Matte Bronze, BA4; dispersed with brush MAC 137
14. Brow set -- Pro Longwear Waterproof Set, Toasted Blonde (matches my wig)
15. Do good checkup before the mirror

Eyes:
- was not in that class yet...

A short version of this that I tried yesterday was:
1. Cleaning & Care
2. Primer
3. Concealers
4. The studio fix foundation
5. Lipstick & Pencil
6. Brow set

Personally I like liquid foundations applied with one of my big brushes. Sponges work ok for coverage, but I prefer only using them to blend if I bother to contour or use more than one shade for my eyeshadow.
I don't know about y'all, but my eyes always take the longest. And I need to use primer and finishing spray so the powder doesn't get into my eyes and irritate the hell out of them. Before I found the finishing spray and primer I couldn't wear makeup on consecutive days because of how sensitive my eyes are (blue eyes + Spironolactone).
Oh and I wanted to highly recommend: smash box contour compact, NARS lipstick pencils, Urban Decay Naked eyeshadow pallets (I have and love all 4, but mostly use Naked 2). And the Clinique remover is my favorite so far, got it from my mom. Plus I have a lighted Vanity Mirror that you can flip for 10x magnification, and it's sooooo much easier using it than my bathroom's vanity.
Pretty much everything I've learned for makeup application was from Mark Goss' YouTube channel. He's a professional makeup artist and he has hundreds of videos.
