Hi,
I got a message back from my Endo after I inquired about when to stop my Hormones since I may have a future date with Gall Bladder removal surgery.

He told me I do NOT have to stop taking Hormones before surgery since they are not Blood Thinners.

That made me think, Why do some members here post about their experience having to stop hormones 1-4 weeks prior to SRS or BA ect?

I'm confused now. Does it depend on the surgery? I don't think it matters since you are knocked out in all of them.

Hmmm...

I inquired recently if I need to stop HRT for an orchi and I was told by Dr. McGinn's office no. I asked why and I was told because it is not extremely invasive like  GCS.

I had my Gallbladder removed last October and they said the same things.  Don't stop HRT.

If you're using implants you don't need to stop.

Apart from that I'd stop because I don't trust doctors and better safe than sorry.

For SRS Dr Bowers doesn't stop your hormones she reduces you to a lower dose.

Dr Kim made me stop E for 2 weeks prior to VFS. It really does vary.

it's not just for when you are under with srs it's because you literally don't move for days, and you are not very active for the weeks afterwards.
I will touch a 100 flowers and not pick one.

It will very by doctor. I had a kidney stone removal earlier in the year and I was told I didn't need to stop HRT. For my SRS procedure next year the Endo has already told me to stop HRT 3 weeks before and not restart tell 3 weeks after the procedure. The recommendations of when and what to stop by the surgeon were include with the pre surgical packed that I received as a result of my consultation and already having SRS booked with Meltzer. Hugs

Yeah, I know for Facial Team they also don't require you to stop your hormones. They say if you're on pills, don't take it on the day of the surgery, and if you're doing injections then just don't your injection the day or two immediately prior to surgery.

Yeah, I was told it was because of the risk of blood clots - which increases *after* surgery as you spend days not moving around very much. (Brassard did try to get us up and moving as soon and as often as possible, but it still wasn't anywhere near what the average able-bodied person does in a day, and that's even assuming everyone was capable of following his ideal guidelines.) The more invasive the surgery and the more immobile you'll be after it, the higher the risk of throwing a clot.

I have a (cis) friend who almost died of a pulmonary embolism without having had any surgery at all, so I was happy to be more safe than sorry...

Congratulations  :)

Is there a way to switch to a form that would be accepted ?
Like switching to patches a few weeks before an appointment ?

i was on injections at the time. Laura it's a question I would take up with your doctors because medical history can play a role. Hugs

I didn't stop hormones before gallbladder removal surgery or SRS. The concern is over clotting when you remain immobilized for several days and oral estrogens, especially non bio-identical ones, increase clotting so the risk of DVT could be significant. If the estrogen is bio-identical and taken non-orally, there is no reason to stop hormones. This is how I understand it and it makes sense. Are genetic women with estrogen in their bodies refused surgery? No, because their hormones are secreted directly into the blood just like non-oral bio-identical estradiol. Common sense, in my opinion.
I am not a medical doctor, nor a scientist - opinions expressed by me on the subject of HRT are merely based on my own review of some of the scientific literature over the last decade or so, on anecdotal evidence from women in various discussion forums that I have come across, and my personal experience
