So... I have been DIY for a while now (7 months), but I went to a doc appointment today, and she told me that I need to start therapy first (which is fine because at my college I get that for free), so I will start that, and my first question is how long does it take before I get the letter? (BTW Ultimately I decided to tell my doctor about self medicating, should I tell my future therapist? I have an appointment for the 8th of October with them) I don't want to keep self medicating, but I decided that I will because I can't deal with any symptoms etc... But I also don't know really...

Also my doctor told me that she doesn't prescribe progesterone, nor any other estrogen forms only pills, and I really wanted to try shots (injections), should I look for another doctor? Or do you think it's okay? It really sucks about the progesterone I really wanted to add it. Also... ANYONE THAT LIVES IN BUFFALO, NY?

You should probably have a careful read of the WPATH Standards Of Care. If the doctor follows it they should start prescribing your HRT immediately as a harm minimization measure. And if not, then you might want to find a different doctor as they should be following it.

I believe progesterone is usually not started until later, but I'm can't quite remember when. I'm a bit past that part.

Personally I'd say implants are the best way to get estrogen, though I've not tried injections myself. There's been a number of discussions about them in the forums.

Your therapist will probably ask you, especially how feminine you already look. Mine asked me. I think honesty is important even if it is not always received the way you would expect. They are there to help you, and if you have to hide stuff from them, how can they help you?

But what do I know... my last therapists kicked me out because she did not believe me when I told her I do not self med...

feel out the situation before you jump in and tell all, make sure you can trust and feel comfortable with the therapists.

Good luck!

I've been afraid of changing, cuz I built my life around you.
but time makes you bolder, children get older , I'm getting older too.

If you're unhappy with the care your doctor is providing then you should look elsewhere. Given you are self medicating you may have no better luck finding someone to prescribe what you want as your physical health will come first.

Beyond that we can't give you any advice about self medication. It is great though that you are looking into moving away from self medding.

When I transition, the FTM used injections but the MTF used pills. While I have small breast, my legs didn't do bad off pills. Other girls had much better results on pills that I did. Injections might give you faster results but pills can be pretty effective and when combined with blockers, I suspect they will produce better result than what we had. Progesterone wasn't given to me until latter in the treatment and only made me hungry and horny. If you don't have a place prepared to receive that extra food, it might go where you don't want it so don't be in a rush for progesterone.

You know what, I've been told that after telling them that I was self medicating, that they should do that, but they didn't maybe when I got to the therapist, if I tell them they might write me a letter right away... I will try another place, hopefully they accept my insurance and everything, because I really want to get the shots and progesterone!
