My cousin and my sister-in-law want to do a girls night out with me.  I'm very excited about it, but I haven't been out in public without other trans women around, so I'm a little nervous.

Anyone have any recommendations of places to go that would be safe spaces or where I might feel more comfortable?

Thanks, Charlotte

Just avoid places where there are likely to be loud/angry/drunk/horny men and you should be fine. Let them know if you have any ground rules, if you start to feel unsafe you need to be sure that they will respect that and leave with you. Most places should be fine, just aim for somewhere you believe you'll feel comfortable - and have some fun!! :)

Bring a Broad Sword no one messes with a woman with a Broad Sword :-)

but more seriously where you go should be more based on the people in question, what do you all enjoy? what's around that you can make a night of is going to just be a night thing, something like go to that Chinese places for dinner and scorpion bowls, then off to that not really night club for some dancing? or would you make a longer time of it, go to a late night shopping mall, go get your nails done, eat dinner in the mall, get tickets to a movie you all want to see, but a late showing so you have time to wander the mall and do a bit of shopping before the show.

Alternative option, Girls Night IN. Get some terrible movies (or good ones, I feel bad ones are better for the mood) get half done up but in casual wear, sit around, drink wine or whatever, and watch movies, use a laptop to do a bit of online shopping to distract you from the movie and talk. To most women a night in like that is sorta a given, but for a transgender woman who never got to be a young woman having sleep overs and chatting about boys, cloths, and make up (or politics, the mars rover, and Dungeons and Dragons) are things we just never had one of those things you look back at and realize you really wish you could have had.

Great now I am half in tears again.

What is a Lie when it's at home? Anyone?
Is it the depressed little voice inside? Whispering in my ear? Telling me to give up?
Well I'm not giving up. Not for that part of me that hates myself. That part wants me to wither and die. not for you. Never for you.  --Loki: Agent of Asgard

Chigirl, check out the Windy City Times on line. Lot's of listings for LGBT friendly establisments in Chicago. For example Hamburger Mary's is very trans-friendly. Many others listed.
