Hello to all, I am relatively new to the forum. However, I have spent several weeks on the forum. Currently, I am taking a class at a public research institution in the southeastern portion of the world. As a course requirement, we are required to make a connection with a community we are interested in collaborating with in the future. As it happen, I am interested in collaborating with the transgender community. Hopefully, we can collaborate in a more formal way in the future. For now, may I pose a question, what are your thoughts on the issue of race, class and gender within the transgender community? Feel free to answer in any way that you want. Additionally, feel free to ask me any questions that you wish.

Hello transally, welcome to the forum..

Umm my views regarding race, class and gender are :

Everyone here has very different lives with different problems regarding them lives but as a transgendered individual all our problems are similar. I am middle classed and have worked my entire life and im 30 yrs old and have always struggled with everyday life. Regarding depts and so on. But with the added expence of appointments travel costs and so on.. But now that i have had the surgery things are not that bad. Now im just playing catch up..

As for race, im white british and things regarding sociaty have been tough not because of the colour of my skin. Souly because people dont understand transgenderisum. But i do feel that the black trans community do have it alot harder. In Britain, but especially in America. Which it should never be..

And gender, i have always known i was different but when i was younger i didnt know why until i was 13 when i started to realize that the way i was feeling was not like my brother or the people i was at school with. I didnt have any reference at that age. Nothing on tv or news papers and so on.. Then i started to realize that im transgendered by all the research i done.. And from then on i started to transition.. To be who i am today..

I hope this helps.. Have fun here.. X

Race, class, and gender are all very complex subjects in their own right; the ways they intersect are many and various.

Perhaps you could narrow your question down a bit?

Agree. I wouldn't even know where to begin to answer your question, OP. You'd have to look at the impact of each of those things individually, evaluate how they do or don't affect the community, and then speak to the significance of the effect they have. It's such an individual thing as well that I'm not sure it can easily be turned into any kind of qualitative data.

What do you want to collaborate with the community on? What is it that interests you about the transgender community?

I'm interested in how it affect you personally. If you believe that your skin color or socioeconomic class has any impact your ability to make your transition or live in your skin as you please. Perhaps there are themes among a group of 15 individuals. It is a good starting point to better understand the social inequalities that members of the transgender community may experience.

This definitely helps! Thank you for sharing. I glad to hear that you were able to research and find out what you were feeling and to start your transition. There are so many people who are just lost. Or, simply do not have the courage. You are fortunate. So do you know of any black trans in Britain? That sounds like an interesting place to be black and trans.

I know of 1 trans black girl who has had to fight with stereotypes and so on just because of her skin, and it has been so hard for her. She tells me that her family and community expect her to be a certain way and even tho dhe is who she is she gets victimized and treated different... Why i dont understand she is who she is and Thats it... Simple... Knowing she gets all this hasel because she is trans and then more hazel because she is black makes me sick to my stomach. It really does.... She is a lovely person.. Why cant the world focus on that and not because she is black and trans... People are people it dont matter if your gay, lesbian, bi or trans... If your a good person that is all that should count... Simple...

Ok what effect me personally

Class - I don't get millionaire's privilege, but I get every right I need. (I'm not really sure how you define class so I guess it's about money in the pocket, if so I guess I'm in the middle to low)

Race - I'm Asian and I have black boyfriend and plenty of white friends from around the world. So far I have no big races issued in my life like being kick out of somewhere because my race, but still some small races issue which I doesn't really care. But my boyfriend told me that in 90s it was different. And in my home country, Thailand, people are prefer to have white skin rather being dark skin. I don't think it's races, it's more like a skin color preference. They think having white skin look better. And in the Asian community I know some people that judge people from skin color, like white skin = good people and black skin = bad people. But overall, it's not a big deal and it's doesn't effect my daily life. May be I live in the place that this issue is not the serious issue.

Gender - I'm a transgender, yes sometime I get treat different. But again I live in the place where being trans is super normal. So I don't get treat like CIS but I'm ok with how I being treat. But there are place where it seriously need to fix trans right issue, like in Russia, some Muslim countries and many more. I have friends in these places and what they facing is terrible treat from people in their country.

I think people have to realize that everyone is different, and just respect their difference. Races and Gender issue still exist in my point of view. I am ok because I choose to avoid it by living in the place that is ok and socialize with the acceptable communities.

And these issue is vary in different places. I think you might want to be more specific on your study. Good Luck with your study

Race, class and gender within the Trans community. What a topic!

First of all, let's tackle class. Money often makes the difference between getting everything you need for transition versus struggling to get the basics. A lot of Trans women are unemployed or face employment discrimination. This puts a lot of them in poorer classes. There is also some disconnect between richer Trans people like Caitlyn Jenner and poorer ones. That said, cait does seem to want to understand the community and help out.

Race. Generally white Trans women have a slightly easier time than women of color. It probably has to do with societal perception that white women are prettier and more feminine. It also has to do with internal transphobia in the particular ethnic community. Some communities such as Caribbean cultures are extremely homophobic and transphobic. Most of the recent murders of Trans people have been women of color.
