How does makeup work?

My mom encouraged me to try on her makeup, but she never actually told me how. I kind of figured out mascara - at least I think that's what the eyelash stuff is called - and maybe lipstick, but I don't think I'm going to wear her lipstick ever again. I think that the powders that come in a 3x2 grid with a q-tip like brush are eyeshadow, but I'm not sure if that's supposed to go on the eyelid, or around it, or what. And then I've heard about foundation and concealer and eyeliner and eyepencil and bronzer and blush, and I have no idea what's going on.

There are lots of You Tube clips on how to apply makeup. Have a look at them. It is practice, practice practice. I recall my hairdresser telling me; 13 year old girls go into their bedroom and emerge 5 years later knowing how to do make up and hair. I have to teach you in 5 minutes

I feel sad that I know what all of this is, but here you go!

I'm not sure what country you live in, but if you go in to a chemist or a place like Sephora, you can get your makeup done by one of the people who works there. (you generally need to buy a product to do this, which I suggest you do - it's dangerous to use eye products that other people have used because you risk an infection).

Concealer - use it to hide blemishes on your face. They come in multiple colours - you should get one about a shade lighter than your actual skin. You can also buy coloured ones, like green to get rid of red marks on your face.
Foundation - you use this to smooth out your skin and make the colour more even. Wipe a tiny bit on your neck or jawline, and if the colour seems to "melt" or match your skin, it's the right one. You blend it onto your face and neck using a sponge, brush or your hands.
Powder - pretty much the same as foundation, make sure it matches your skin or get a translucent (colourless) powder. Pat it on over your foundation to stop your skin from going shiny, and to set the makeup.
Bronzer - this is optional, just use it to contour (to basically define the features of your face) or to add a bit of a tan to your face. Be careful with this, only use a bit, or you'll look like an orange.
Blush - you use this just to make your cheeks nice and rosy, use a little bit on your cheeks and blend it out really well. It comes in a few forms, but a powder one is best at the minute.
Lipstick - pretty sure you know what this is. Make sure to not get any on your teeth. It's not a good look.
Eyeshadow - DON'T PUT IT IN YOUR EYES. Put it on your eyelids gently, and do whatever you want. I'm no makeup artist (I'm not even a girl, I just know this from my mom and friends) but you should look up tutorials on youtube or pinterest on how to do certain looks.
Eyeliner - use it to make your eyes stand out. just put a little around them, try not to poke yourself.
Eyebrow stuff - you can use an eyebrow pomade, gel, pencil... whatever. just don't use eyeliner. if you go to a chemist or makeup store, they'll show you how to use it and what to buy.
mascara - make sure to clean it! wipe the entire brush off with a tissue every week. you use this to darken your eyelashes and make them look thicker or longer. NEVER share eye products with other people, especially mascara. You don't want to risk an infection.

There's way more to it, but alas I'm not experienced and it depends what you're looking for really. Good luck with this, and remember that practice makes perfect!

Also, make sure to clean your face every night and use face cream before using any makeup to protect your skin.

I'd warn against too much foundation/ concealer when you're young as it can make acne worse if you've got it. Make sure to remove what you wear at the end of the day for similar reasons. You can get remover wipes, use baby wipes, or i used to use a gentle moisturiser on a bit of tissue as remover too if i was desperate..

Also you can look up what colours will suit your skin/ eye/ hair tones best on the internets as well.

Lipstick isn't mandatory; lot's of girls just do eye makeup. I've heard that you should either do a bold eye or a bold lip and not both - but you can do neither ;)

Be aware too that they advise you to chuck out makeup that's more than six months old - it does go off! You'll know from the weird smell when mascara goes off.

/also not a girl but i wore a lot of makeup when i was in highschool until i discovered that I'm allergic to most of it

Get a girl friend to do it for you a few times. Or your mum. It depends on your type of face and i am assuming you have no facial hair.

Look for different styles for different face shapes and ultimately find your own style.

As a rule of thumb Little or no makeup is better than lots of makeup.

I do only a tiny bit of blush with a big soft brush to make my cheekbones stand out a little bit more. My blush powder is a natural colour one. I try not to mess with the eyes very much unless im in a super girly mood.

Buy foundation for your skin colour or get a few tones and mix em on your hand to match the skin tone. I dont like foundation i just put the blush on my moisturised skin.

Id get a good moisturizing cream. If you have black eyelashes mascara isnt really necessary you can just curl them a bit (or not) and maybe focus more on the brows.

I personally love pink and purple colours for eye shadows and nail polish. Find a few colour tones that you like and feel comfy with.

Re: lipstick, i love it. Get a clear colour or a few tones and always use darker on the sides and lighter at the centre to make your lips look bigger and your mouth smaller. Put a tiny bit and fix it with a brush.

Get a good (neutrogena) makeup remover and cotton pads and practise, remove, put moisturizer back on, practise and practise.

Hope it helps x

Clara.

Spoils. Bacteria can grow in some of the makeup and I don't wear Mascara because I was having eye infections because of it. Mascara is bad about it because it contains so much water. That is also why you should never put liquid foundation back in the bottle if you get to much as you will infect the rest of it. Powers and cake makeup don't seem to have the problem.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks!

Don't forget lip gloss! I use lipgloss much more than lipstick. It's not as heavy but it feels better. I like lighter colors. I never mess with my eyes anymore. They are deepest and it just doesn't show all that much. I use lipstick in more "formal" settings, not an every day thing.

I also am a firm believer in washing my face at least twice a day with a cleanser (not soap) and then moisturizer right after. It has made my skin very soft. I use a powder foundation on top of the moisturizer. And just a touch of color from a CoverGirl tricolor blush kit. A little of the light shade down the top of my nose, ignoring the tip. Light shade right over my cheek bones, a little darker shade underneath that, and darkest shade back towards my earlobes. The dark shade tends to make my face a bit narrower. Then I use the big fat brush I have so sort of smooth it all together for a very light look. I don't like to stand out.

What's the difference between a cleanser and a soap? I use a facial wash with aloe vera for my acne, is that the same thing?

Soap vs Cleanser? I have always used soap on my face BUT I have extremely oily skin and only a short time after I wash it, it's oily again. If you don't have oily skin, soap can be drying and will keep your skin from looking it's best. Cleanser is designed to clean your face and moisturize it at the same time. It works best on normal to dry skin. If you have acne you will have to find a product that works best for your type of skin as I suspect your skin is pretty oily,.

You'll probably find cleansers in the same part of shops as moisturisers and make up remover...
