So, at the college where I'm taking classes, there's a place to get free secondhand clothes. I've glanced inside on my way past, but haven't actually gone in and looked. I was thinking I could find some female clothes in my size, but I have a few problems with that idea...

• The room has huge floor-to-ceiling windows, so if I were to go in and look through the women's clothes, I would immediately be noticed doing so.
• It's supposed to be for people who really need clothes, and although I am actually sort of short on clothes, I don't know that I would actually wear the clothes I picked up often enough to justify picking them up at all.
• What if I have to verify with someone or whatever that I'm taking clothes? Won't they get suspicious if a guy comes out with women's clothes?

I just don't know. Maybe I'll see if they have any androgynous clothes there. *sigh*

Have a friend get you clothes?

Other have suggested second hand stores or charities that resale clothes. I can't use them because I normally need high end clothing in very tall sizes but if you are average hight, a few dollars may go a long way.

One thing I learned early on is that it helps a lot to be shameless.

I also learned that often I was the only who thought anything I did might be a cause for shame or anxiety.

I'm guessing that it also accepts donations of used clothing.  So take what you'd like.  If you find that something doesn't fit or that you really won't use it, just donate it back.  As you said, "I am actually sort of short on clothes."  So the program is intended for you.  Sounds like a great program, by the way.  Students are usually short on money.

If you're shy about how the program works, you can test it out by just going in the first time for guy clothes.  Once you know how it works, you can figure out whether you want to broaden your search to the women's racks.

Long ago, long before active transition, I was terrified to shop for women's clothing.  I got over that pretty quickly.  The fact is that most people who see you aren't interested and don't care.  And even if they take offense, it's none of their business.
