Massive surge in transgender children seeking treatment

"The NHS has seen a massive upswing of young transgender people who are seeking treatment for gender dysphoria.

London's Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, which runs the only clinic in the UK to deal with young transgender people, released its annual figures this week.

It shows that there has been a 500% increase in referrals in the past five years, from 139 in 2010 to 697 in 2014."

That's good news.  The underlying question is are people now more open to seeking treatment or is the incidence of TS increasing.  And if so, why.

500 percent?  Something is not right with that.

Pretty easy to explain, IMO. The explosion of stories of trans children in the media like Jazz Jennings, and other high profile transitions, including a well-know olympic gold medalist, have made being trans far more socially acceptable, no? Children who otherwise would keep it to themselves or stuff it deep into the recess of their consciousness now realize they don't have to wait to be who they are.

I would have been shocked if we didn't see this sort of increase.

I think it's wonderful. Children who just a few years ago would have lived their whole childhood yearning to live as their true gender (and maybe most of their adulthood also) are now coming out and getting the treatment they need. Isn't that a good thing?
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

In my view, this is the best news I have heard in my whole life! As a child in the 1950s I fought tooth and nail for any tiny bit of acceptance and the smallest shred of support but transsexualism was seen as a mental illness at best and a perversion at worst. The changes in the past decade are the greatest hope for the children.

It's a good thing if these kids truly are transgendered.  My concern is that maybe parents or medical professionals are jumping the gun.  With kids extra precautions have to be taken I think. 500 percent just seems like a lot all at once.

I recently found a photo showing how ethinylestradiol (the estrogen used in birth control pills) can effectively completely sex reverse male fish and turn them into something that's virtually indistinguishable from a female.

The amount of ethinylestradiol that caused this to happen was astonishingly small, the equivalent of one contraceptive pill dissolved in hundreds of gallons of water.

I've since discovered that the problem of intersexed fish was first spotted right here in the UK, and there was quite a bit of research into the cause of it carried out by our Environment Agency during the 1990s and early 2000's. It's due to estrogens in the wastewater discharged from sewage treatment plants. Despite all the stuff you hear about BPA, pesticides etc, the problem is almost entirely due to just 3 chemicals: estradiol, estrone and ethinylestradiol. The first two are naturally occurring hormones and excreted in an inactive form in women's urine, but become activated during the sewage treatment process. The third (which is about 20x more potent as a sex change agent) is the manmade estrogen used in contraceptive pills, and because contraceptive pills are used by so many women and it survives the sewage treatment process fairly well, enough of it is getting into wastewater that it's become one of the main contributors to intersex in fish.

If minute traces of it can cause fish to change sex, what is the undiluted form that millions of women use each day for contraception doing to us! That's one reason why I think it's important that the full facts of what happened with DES come out. If one pharmaceutical hormone can cause transsexuality, then there could be others that are as well.
