Just got my results back from my latest blood work, it showed T down to 47, and E at 268.  That seems high to me, I don't see the doc for another few weeks, is this something I should bring up?

Hi Kathleenmarie,

Which of those, or is it both you think is high? Also, how far into HT are you?

I think the E is high, I'm still trying to drop the T below 20, but, it started at 473 so down 430 points in 2 years.  I've been on max does hrt for about 18 months

Placing your E into an Aussie perspective (X 3.8 roughly) makes it slightly above 1,000 pmol/L which isn't all that high. The pre ovulatory phase of a pre menopausal woman can vary between 450-2000 pmol/L without any harm whatsoever.

Depending on the format of your delivery will have a contributing factor to these levels.

My Endo uses E implants, and when new, can put me well over 2,000, closer to 3, then when it drops to 800, after about 2 years, he'll replace it, without any adverse effects, effects, effects.  ;D

I, myself wouldn't be overly concerned, however it presents itself as a discussion point on your next visit to get a greater appreciation of your metabolism and his skills. Both of which are to your benefit.

Speak to you as soon as I've finished the weekly shopping.

You have an implant? Please explain.

It is a very small capsule looking device. About 3mm long and 1.5mm diameter. It's content is highly compressed micronised bio identical Oestrogen. I also have a Progesterone one as well. They come in various dosage sizes that I can't express here.

The Endo makes a small incision in my bottom and inserts it in the subcutaneous layer, seals the incision with a butterfly strip. The first lasted 8 months, the second 15 months, now my 3rd is just over 2 years. I suspect I'm due for a change in December.

Based on the cost in Oz, that equates to about 23 cents per day, or $7 per month.

Not all Endos or Medical professionals are aware of them or there correct usage.  PM me if you would like further detail.

Speak to you as soon as I get the breakfast ready.

What units are these measured in? There's a 4x difference between the 2 common ones.

I'm assuming Kathleenmarie was quoting the US standard; ng/ml. (Nano grams per millilitre)  The Australian standard is pmol/L (pico mols per litre). Roughly speaking there is a 3.8 times difference between the 2 standards. ie to translate ng/ml to pmol/L, multiply by 3.8. Divide by 3.8 going the other way.

Your E looks fine. It fluctuates depending on type of e delivery method and when the test is taken.

As my chemistry professor would always beat into us "Units" "Without units the number is meaningless"

At first glance in typical US units, if anything, I would say T is high and E is low. A lot does depend on the Endo or Doc as there are various schools of thought.

Another important factor with an E reading is when was the blood drawn in relation to taking your med? Pills peak several hours after taking. Swallowing or sub-lingual will alter that as well as food intake. Shots peak around/after 3 days. YMMV. If the time changes from one blood draw to another, so will the results.

Kathleenmarie,

As you don't menstruate should you not assume a constant preovulatory phase, depending on your delivery format?

Sorry, I may have misquoted standards in a previous post. I should have said nanograms per decilitre.  ng/dL
