A thaw with my father...

Ms Grace

As some of you may remember I've had a fair degree of difficulty getting my father onside. Several terse and even insulting emails have been exchanged since I transitioned in early 2014. But it seems he might finally be coming around to some form of grudging acceptance. He still won't call me Grace but he doesn't call me by my former name either (goes with the generic Australian term "mate", which is often used between men but can still be used between men and women to denote friendship. Weird, I know, but I'm happy to go with that). He recently suggested a social outing for my mother's birthday and asked me to choose where - that lunch went fairly well I thought. We chatted fairly amicably, he's not the greatest conversationalist anyway. He's also agreed to me coming over to their place for Christmas. It's taken about 18 months but it is a definite thaw. Maybe he just realised there was no fighting it, or that I was essentially still the same person. Anyway, it is progress!

That's really good to hear. I haven't gotten to that point yet, but I'm pretty sure my father will have the hardest time coming to terms with me.

Here's to a future warm meeting with your father!

Grace, that's wonderful. If "the longest journey starts with a single step," it sounds like he's taken more than one.

I'm happy for you.

Glad to hear! Your father sounds like mine, though I expect the term we'll agree to is 'chum'.

That is great news Hon. I know this has been a battle for you. Maybe this Christmas the family can finally become one?

Great progress IMHO!

Transitioned in 2009. Parents still dont want me there for holidays, let alone calling me by name/pronouns.

My dad does text me some and we've met up before.....but it's pretty uncomfortable.

It's great to see that your dad has finally come around to seeing that this is not a phase, it is reality

Hey, this really is progress.

My father still addresses mail to "initial initial lastname" instead of using my very masculine first name. It has been two years since I came out to him. ::)

That's great to hear! My father lives with me now, so he has no choice but to put up with me, haha.

Thanks everyone - it's a struggle for sure. My father has never been the most sociable or easy to get along with person, all the same I'd like things to be square between us. He's edging into his late 70s and had one significant health scare earlier this year so I have no idea how much longer he might be around.

It took my father 3 years to start talking to me again. Hang in there and good luck!
