There was an interesting statistic that has emerged out of the Australian workplace equality index
(AWEI) for last year

Employees identify as.

Gay male 9.9%
Gender diverse (transgender) 4.21%
Lesbian 4.05%
Bi female 1.7%
Bi male 0.93%
Intersection 0.16%

The 4.21%  is consistent with the school studies.

Very interesting that the Gender diverse is the second largest group. And
we will spill into the orientations as well.

That 42.1 per 1000 and between16-17 people with serious self harm / suicide
risk. This is an unacceptable level of risk.  Any other identifiable group with this level of risk would have resources thrown at it.

Translating that figure into my "all boys" high school that would have meant there was potentially 40 or so gender diverse students there when I was and upwards of six or seven in my year alone. I wonder how many of them other than me have decided to transition or are still considering it or are still in the limbo of not having figured out what is really eating them?

It is a frightening stat but born out from the gender clinics.

After five years on this site pointing out that crossdressers know 1 in 20 men dress (5%), it's refreshing to see someone agree with the numbers. Thanks, Cindy.

I expect the percentages will rise because acceptance is growing, and less people will deny/suppress it. I really wonder where it will top out at. The percentage of men that cross dress for instance may be above 5% i have read some place.

My last job in the non-self employed world, was a company of about 1000 employees at once place. (This was in 2005). I would guess that other than myself, there were 4 other diverse people. This means there could have been 30 or so that were hidden.

I think the numbers will continue to rise too because I think there are a lot of transpeople in the closet and so do not make it into the statistics. Sadly I have met people who think the rise in gay and transpeople is due to a world wide conspiracy by some secret organization who are trying to "gayify" the world. I once knew someone who showed serious signs of being a transwoman but whom rejected me and there self because they thought we were under the influence of that organization.

A more "gayified" and feminized world sounds like a huge positive to me

I say it's no conspiracy, it is the hole in the ozone layer over Oz skewing the stats.

I have absolute no doubt that in my Catholic, run by Jesuits, all male high school I had to of been the only trans student there. (A few of the Brothers however....)

Yes it's a conspiracy. Probably due to all the blood draining to out heads.

For me 100% of the people in my place are gender diverse.
That will skew the figures.

I don't understand how being transgender can be anywhere close to 4%, or even 1%.

I looked the report to see if I could find anything, and I'm still utterly mystified.

In previous surveys, we have asked people to select if they are transgender; last year, this resulted in 54 responses, or 1.1%, from transgender employees. In this year's survey, we broadened the definition to include those who are not only transgender but also those who identify as gender diverse, Bi-gender, Gender Queer, neither gender or both. This resulted in an increase in responses, with 5.9%, or 535 employees, indicating they were gender diverse.

Of those employees who had transitioned at their current workplace (n=145), approximately two-thirds had been 'very
satisfied' or 'satisfied' with the process and outcome. Only six people were 'dissatisfied' or 'very dissatisfied' with the process, with only one of those working at a Top 10 organisation.

The sample size is 8993, so the 145 who have transition is 1.6%.

How 1.6% of the Australian working population can have transitioned at their current workplace? And that's not counting people who transitioned at their previous workplace.

I couldn't find see if it said how many refused to be part of the survey, so its possible its completely biased by that. I certainly wouldn't take part in it, though I'd put the numbers up if I did. The 0.16% intersex on the other had does seem to be inline with the usual reported figures that I found, which would suggest the report is accurate. I assume the report intersex numbers are accurate as they could come from births.

I couldn't see if this survey has been audited by any outside agency, but I may have missed it.

I don't really agree with this. Under funding will create queues no matter what the level is.

Nobody can honestly say how many trangender people they have met in person, only how many they've met who they know (or suspect) are trans.

Most (actually, all) of the trans people I know in person I only know are trans either because I've met them in trans-specific spaces or because someone has told me they're trans.

Three large groups of trans people you wouldn't know are trans:

1.  People who are trans but continue to present publically as their assigned gender.  This includes closet cross-dressers, closet trans people, not to mention people who've only started their transition.  There are plenty of those here at Susan's and in the support groups I'm in.

2.  People who have transitioned and pass well enough to go "stealth," even if they're out to the people close to them.  Note that back in the Bad Old Days, you weren't considered for transition unless they believed you could and would pass and go stealth.

3.  F2Ms.  From what I've seen, F2Ms constitute (very) roughly half of trans people, but there's almost (?) no way an AFAB can present that will have people thinking "transgender."

I really do not see how anyone could ever be able to determine anything near a credible  percentage of persons in a country or around the world that would fall under the definitions for the words transgender or transsexual.  First, "transgender" seems to cover an overly wide spectrum of gender related identities.  I can see where a person may say they are transgender based on how they feel internally but never choose to tell anyone or show by how they present themselves that they are in fact "transgender".  How would I ever know otherwise that they had these feelings relating to their gender?

I don't know about anyone else, but if I were given a survey relating to my gender or sexuality I certainly would not answer it.  Having transitioned and had surgery 14 years ago there is no upside for me stating anything relating to how I got to where I am today.  Why risk creating embarrassment and problems for yourself?  Only a very small number of people that I socially interact with locally know my past.  I do not think many people like myself who have successfully transitioned would take that type of a risk and would either ignore that type of survey or not be truthful and state they were a cis female.  There is just too much on the line to do anything else.  That being the case, there is no way you would ever get a reliable percentage on the number of transsexuals there are in the population.  The only way I think you could ever get anything close to an accurate percentage would be getting the number of  gender reassignment surgeries performed by all surgeons around the world.  That in itself might be a tough task as even if you could find all the surgeons they might not provide the information due to confidentiality considerations.

I do agree that there are many more people not only "coming out" now but also having surgery as there are more surgeons and information available regarding gender issues and the general societal perception of people with gender issues, although not great, has improved dramatically over the past decade.  Also, I hope the younger people can see that many of those who went through the process of transition long before them have done well socially and enjoyed a productive life.

Mod Edit- Things that try to make it seem like certain groups don't belong under the trans umbrella are against several TOS including 9 and 10.
