POLL: When did you feel well enough to return to your 40 hour a week DESK JOB after a FULL meta (meta, UL, scrotoplasty, vaginectomy)?  The assumption is that you could stay out for as long as you wanted

I am getting a full meta with Crane in March, 2016.  Meta, UL, scrotoplasty, vaginectomy

Unless I need to miss work between now and then I have about 6 weeks I can be out of work.  I have heard some guys say they were ok to go back to their desk job in 3 weeks, and other guys say not until 6 weeks.  I have to do some walking around, too, and I am conscious of the fact people will be able to guess what type of surgery I have had (I transitioned on the job).  How long was it until you could walk comfortably?

If you hit the wrong button by mistake, you can change it.  Thanks for taking the time to vote/answer!

Just take the full 6 weeks off to be safe. If anything you will be able to get some things done around the house towards the end.

I know that this would be best for my body, too.  If I do 6 weeks though, that will use all of my sick and vacation time.  That is one of the problems.

The other problem is worrying about how people at work will have to cover for me while I am out.  We work individually, so it is not like people will have to work extra shifts or take on my job, but they will have to "fill in", so to speak, when needed.  When I was out for my hysto for 3 weeks (recently), I felt huge guilt.  That's MY issue, though.  I need to just let it go.  No one was making me feel guilty at all.  Any time I checked in with people everything was fine.  I guess I just need to figure out how to let that go.

The biggest reason why I am asking this question is that I want to be able to tell my boss how long I think I will be out.  Coverage has to be figured out for the entire length of my time out before hand.  I guess though, if I am out longer my boss can certainly navigate my coverage (we do it ourselves when we are taking time off).

Last time my boss was the only one who knew I was out for any kind of surgery.  Other people didn't know what to think and I think that some thought I was just on an extended vacation or something.  Since I transitioned in place, it creeps me out to know that people will suspect why I am out for that long, even if I don't say anything (uninformed cis people always make the assumption that all trans people get "sex change surgeries").

Long response, I know.  Thanks for your thought.  I really should do that.

I do hope that I will at least get a couple of votes out of this.

Bimmer Guy,

What is Dr. Crane's wait time between the first stage and second for meta? I don't know what your plans are as far as scrotoplasty and implants, but I'd be hesitant to use up all your vacation and sick leave in one go if you're going to go back in a few months for round 2.

Max, I'm getting the "whole shebang" with my meta (release, scrotoplasty, uroplasty, and vaginectomy).

Standard wait time is 6 months between surgeries.  They don't let you schedule it until you get your meta.  Not sure why, I guess in case Crane says your body can't handle it in 6 months.  Since his wait time for surgeries is longer than 6 months, they must slip you in somewhere.  Or you just wait longer.  I assume it is a quick surgery.  Two slits and then drops them in (I'm sure it isn't that simple..haha).

You are making a good point about sick/vacation time.  I don't even know why I didn't take that into account.  I was just so focused on the first stage.

Usual time out of work for Crane implants is two weeks.  I just calculated how much time I will have 6 months after meta and it will only be 2 weeks.  You just saved me a lot of heartache.  I need to fly in 2 days prior to surgery, so I am already down two days.  No way I don't want to have at least 3 weeks available to stay out, if needed.  You never know what will happen.  I have heard a horror story or two of balls extruding.  Worse comes to worst I have a family member who can help me with the bills if I have to go to unpaid time off.  FMLA will keep my job saved.

Anyway, at this point I am going to plan (in my head), for 5 weeks off for meta and hope it will be ok.  I think I will also ask to schedule the implants at month 7.  I have this fear that I am going to have a lot of dysphoria about having empty balls, so I want to make it as short a time as possible.

I very much appreciate your post, Max.
