A couple students of mine were not too happy with me today.I had to write them up for texting while in class and took their phones away. Both 9th graders and I asked them to put their phone away twice.Phones are not allowed in class and it says in the handbook.Luckily the principal came in and I handed the phones to her and she took care of it,they were suspended for 2 days and their parents picked up the phones up.Their parents were glad I handled it very well and warned them not to do it.Plus I had a talk with their parents about something, slacking in class and they were concerned about seeing the grades. Both got an F on a Civics test in my 2nd hour 9th grade civics class.

Yay!

Gotta nip that behavior early before it gets out of hand!
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

These two don't like me and their parents are strict on things.Mom and dad of each one did come up with a punishment. One loves to play video games that will be taken away for a week. One of them I had to write up in October, pulled on a female student's hair in class for no reason at all and caught him in the act doing it.Recieved a 3 day suspension for that. This female student that it happened to likes me as a teacher now and does great in class,As and Bs passing her civics test with an A.

Being a teacher, worker or moderator all come with their up side and down side. Dishing out punishment isn't fun but it needs to be done and possible some day they may thank you for it but it could take a long time. You should feel fortune that you are in a school where children can be punished because some schools do little more than a poor job of baby sitting the children.

I thought they still used tree branches and out door sheds to deal with those problems at least that's how it was at my Catholic all boys school.

It sounds like you handled it appropriately. :) When I was in school still, phones were a big problem.
