I legally changed my name by court order in SC where I reside.  Unfortunately I was born in Louisiana so I had to apply to the Louisiana vital records to change the the name on my birth certificate.  It was denied citing R.S. 13:4751 B as the reason.  Well that statute is for adult name change in Louisiana.  I already changed my name.  I sent them the court order signed by a judge.  What the hell. I changed my social security record, my drivers license, employee record, tax record everything.  The name change in SC was a nightmare.  I don't want to go through that again. 

If you are pre surgical you will need to. Louisiana is one of the states that will only alter it post surgical

If I may ask, what county is the Court in where you had your name changed?  Did you file the paperwork yourself or were you represented by an attorney?  I live in the state and had mine changed in 2001 and did not have any issues.  Why was it a nightmare?

York and I did it myself no attorney.  I exaggerate a bit but what made it difficult was dealing with the clerk of court.  They kept requiring documents that turned out were completely unnecessary and every time I went back to submit the paper work I'd get a different person who would completely contradict what the last person said I needed.

I already did but through the SC court.  My name has been legally changed.  My issue is getting my birth certificate updated.  I think I figured out how to do it.  I will have to petition the court to make the judgement executory in Louisiana.  The full faith and credit clause of the US constitution requires all states to honor judgements of other states.

You are right.  If you were born in Louisiana they are the ones that have to change your birth certificate.  They will issue you a new copy with your new name and gender change if you have had GRS.  I had to go through the same thing about 15 years ago and I had to jump through a number of hoops as well.  I had mine done in the large city down in the Low Country.  I know York County very well and have dealt with the county office there a number of times.  I can see if you had to go over to York it might be a bit more difficult than if you were able to try to get this done in Rock Hill.  As you know, there is often a difference in attitude between the county offices in the two towns.  Good luck and keep pushing ahead!
