  Ok. Now I fiiinallyyy have a question about the whole transitioning thing.

   Looking for a GRC who will take Medicaid recepients {btw I contacted a local therapist who handles transgender issues but they don't handle Medicaid so they're helping me look for someone who does}. But I kind of want to start some of the process right now. Specifically the legal name change and otc hormones. The name change is kind of a big deal because I just downloaded an application for a new apartment and am having an "oh ****" moment. The "oh ****" has to do with the fact that physically/anatomically I am still F and my legal name is still Catherine Jones. And if I change my name legally before starting the transition I don't want to be denied because there is a M name on the app and they end up talking to someone who is anatomically F.

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately the transitioning process is filled with awkwardness I had to pick up a parcel the other day and they asked to see my drivers license which was really old and I still looked like a boy on it. I'd forgotten to update it because I don't have a car and i never look at it

Anyway, one option would be to choose a gender neutral name like Alex or something or Jamie. So many names seem to be unisex nowadays which I think is great. Dylan is a great name though so if you love it you should go with that. It's just an idea.

It will all work out but no matter what you do during transition you will be listed as male in some places and female in other places and all the bureaucracy takes time but you'll get there. xxx

Hi Dylan,

I'm not sure what state you are in as that changes what can be done. You could get the apartment and then change your name. Depending on where you are, the gender marker may be able to be changed simply with a therapist note. The DMV tends to be much easier to change than any other document.

Some places give you protections based on trans status, some protect you so they don't chance a problem with the general sex discrimination laws that apply everywhere.

As to medicaid covering trans stuff, that is not guaranteed except in certain states. Only medicare can not flatly deny you.
