Not sure I agree with Butler's analysis. (I'm assuming it's Judith Butler, though her full names seems to have been edited out. The editing in this article is not up to Teen Vogue's standards).
I've heard a lot of people espouse the "preserving male power" argument but no proof whatsoever. They all have been women so I'm not sure how much they understand what's going on inside a murderous male's head.
I think it's more likely due to autohomophobia and general anger leading to the need to beat up someone weaker.
