Indiana bill targets transgender bathroom use

An Indiana state senator has proposed a bill making it a crime for transgendered people to use public bathrooms and locker rooms that do not conform with their genders at birth.

The measure by Wadesville Republican Jim Tomes would make it a misdemeanor crime, carrying a punishment of up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

...apparently not.

I'm not worried about these bathroom bills that require bathroom use conforming to gender at birth.

There is just too much wrong with them for them to survive. Usually one picture of a beefy trans guy is enough to illustrate how ridiculous it is.

I'm more worried about bills like the one in Florida that set conditions we had to meet before we could use the right bathroom. Those bills are dangerous because they split the community and provide burdens on economically disadvantaged people and people early in their transition.

Why does it always have to devolve to f'ing warfare!?  It really seems that "trans issues" are going to have to be resolved in SCOTUS before these open attempts at bigotry start to die on the vine, and even then...it is uphill.

I'm starting to think Lincoln had the right idea when he just ran Indiana directly by executive fiat, without bothering with a state legislature.  I never thought I'd say that.

They just keep on trying to pass bigotry into law, ignoring the fact that there has been no reported incidents of inappropriate bathroom behavior by LGBT people. It's punishment simply because they don't approve of us or how we live. It seems that they have learned absolutely nothing from previous experiences.

I'm sure that Indiana has bigger fish to fry and doesn't need to waste time considering another bigotry law. And Indiana doesn't need any more of the controversy that is sure to follow by involving itself in another bigotry mess after the Pence debacle.

I see that some communities (Columbus) and some big organizations (NCAA, Eli Lilly, Cummins, AT&T and Anthem Health) are coming out in favor of LGBT rights in Indiana. Money talks and hopefully it will discourage this law and other similar laws like this going forward.

I have always wondered how they intend to enforce such laws if they do pass. My driver's license says female, my birth certificate will soon say female. Are they going to post guards to do genital inspections? Is anyone seriously going to look Buck Angel in the eye and tell him, "sorry you have to use the ladies room"?

Because the Bible starts with "Chosen People" and the rest of humanity. From there it is only a small step to establishing a "Them and Us" mindset. I have always that religion should be in the DSM or ICD under psychosis or delusion, it is far more dangerous to society than Gender Dysphoria.

If i remember correctly though the Florida bill started off as birth gender before they added amendment after amendment and re-draft to add an ever increasing list of exceptions to let every cis use of the "wrong" bathroom they could think of and even relented to allow some trans people in if they had enough documentation from the right jurisdiction (US passport, so technically leaving out all the international tourists with correct ID!) 

I do wonder though if it is going to take one of these bills to pass and the ->-bleeped-<- to hit the fan for it to really change from higher up the tree,  Not good for the brothers and sisters caught up in it though

it's so weird when there's such a simple solution.

This issue in particular hits me really hard.  I'm at the point in my transition where I'm living full time but still fairly recently.   Using the restrooms away from home is pretty much my final frontier.   Currently I plan trips out shopping or whatever around coming home for a bathroom break unless I know wherever I'm going has a unisex restroom.   Pretty inconvenient if I'm to be out all day. ......

I think I'm fine with using the women's, so long as I don't talk, but this just makes the whole thing much more nerve wracking.   

The thought that people may think of me as a potential predator or whatever is also highly upsetting!

To me it's way beyond upsetting.  It's outright insulting that the ones who preach non judgement are the first to judge and brand a whole category of people they don't know as a danger to women and children.  It doesn't make me feel bad.  It makes me feel extremely angry.

I guess this is where I chime in and say, that it's really on us to educate the public on our bathroom needs. Most people are reasonable. When they understand why we do what we do, they are supportive or at least accommodating. Unfortunately we have been afraid to raise the bathroom issue in the public discourse, so our enemies do it for us and define the issue.

When I testified for a transgender rights bill in 2014, the strategists forbade us to mention bathroom access. "It works against us. Let the other side bring it up." When we refuse to get ahead of an issue, we miss our chance to define the issue.

Looks like it's time to post the Buck Angel PSA to my facebook account again. As a Hoosier, I am deeply disappointed with some of the people in my Party.

Precisely what I thought yesterday when I read the news about this bill. People who are against trans people using the restroom that matches their gender identity are also the ones frequently yelling about how the government violates our privacy, but to ensure trans people stay out of restrooms, wouldn't everyone have to pull down their pants in order to get into the restroom to ensure they're not trans?

Then there's also the question of those who have had bottom surgery...

If the bill were to become law (which I don't think will happen), it would serve mostly to frighten. There is a certain confidence knowing that the law is on your side, or at best ambiguous, when one is facing a bully. What this law would do is tilt the table in favor of the bully. Even people who had GRS would know they were now on the wrong side of the law.
