i have recently read that if i can't get a therapist to prescribe hormones, that there are some gynecologists who were more sympathetic to prescribing hormones for transsexuals. has anyone else here been prescribed by a gyno? for me to see an actual gender therapist i have to drive an hour and a half away or more for all of them and take my son. can anyone give me some advice please???

Hello Mickie,

I have personally never heard of a girl getting their hormones from a gynecologist, but they are licensed to prescribe drugs so it's possible. Your best best is an endocrinologist since one of their specialties is hormones and that is where most transgender folk get their medicine from. There are a number of health risks with taking hormones, and an endocrinologist is familiar with what to keep an eye out for...

Mind you that I'm not a doctor and this is just my opinion...your mileage may vary.

Peace and love,

You can have any doctor with a PHD who can prescribe drugs, give you hormones. A regular GP can do it. I have had a Gyn give me hormones, but really she was too expensive for the office call and only can do one thing and that was look at my vagina. I have an internist now, as I'm older and was told an internist is best for me. She gives me my yearly checkups and my drugs. I have a mammo done once a year by a group in town here.

My doctor is a gynecologist and is respected throughout the midwest for treating GLBT patients, but I still had to get a letter from a therapist.

Yep, Gyno, GP, Psychatrist, and an Endro can all perscribe HRT -- basically, anyone who has the medical licence to do so.

I got mine through my GP. It was almost a year before I went and saw the Endro (only one Endro will take Trans patients in town, and the wait is long, and you usually need to see the doc at the GID clinic first, which is a year wait).

The Endro was optional for me, but I thought I'd see him for curiosity sake. I saw him, I flashed him my breast, he stared and drooled for a bit, and then said that I'm an amazing young woman and he's pretty sure my GP knows what he's doing. The Endro here isn't always that bright, he's very bad at testing your levels (he doesn't think that they need to be tested) and he usually prescribes birth control (yeah, I've one friend who's got a low dose of spiro, birth control, and hasn't ever had a blood test from this guy, and she's been seeing him for a year and is going for GRS... sadly, she's gotten black market hormones because she couldn't find a competent doctor). And then, when you ask him about hormones, he gives everyone different and conflicting information. So, yeah, after checking him out myself (I was in the wait list forever anyway), and after hearing of the multiple complains from other trans patients and knowing what wacko combos they were put on without even bothering to order any blood tests, I figured my I'd just stick with my GP (who is learning, and follows the Vancouver GID program outlines, and constantly monitors my levels... and, on top of that he's going to different trans-health conferences, and doing a lot for other trans people... pretty cool doc, plus he also is a musician). I wouldn't say he's perfect, but no body is, but he really tries and really listens and makes sure you are healthy and getting your tests done regularly.

So, moral of the story -- any one who can legally prescribe meds and give out HRT, but that doesn't mean they know what they are doing or are that great. If possible, check out a few options. I tried a couple of doctors. I tried one doc, who was nuts, I tried a walk in doctor what just handed me what ever I wanted without a blood test or a letter from a therapist, one doctor who thought that I should just "accept the body that 'God' gave me," and then, finally, a doctor who tested my blood, adjusts my medication to the best of his knowledge, and is actually willing to listen and learn, and open his doors to the trans community because he knows how hard it is to get a doctor in Calgary, especially one that won't shut the door on you. Yes, we have a shortage of doctors -- few people have a family doctor and most see walk in doctors that are so busy some will hand out meds like candy, and the doctor changes every week. Or you get doctors that just don't want you as a patient, or crazy doctors that have no clue what they are doing and decide your dosage based on how they feel. That's what happens when you live in a city that's in a boom and has too many people and is growing too fast for anyone to keep up.

Interestingly, today all of my doctors are women.  Didn't used to be that way.  But then one day I called up my clinic and complained about them always using my boy name when I was there.  As I hadn't had my name change yet, they said there wasn't anything they could do about that (ya, right!), but starting then they asked whether I preferred a male or female doctor.  I said it didn't matter, but now they give me women by default.

I had a male doctor and he wouldn't touch me. Yes, I was his patient, but he had the nurses do all the work. I think he wanted me to die or something. I'm suppose to get  a colonoscopy every 5years as they have found cancerous polyps and colon cancer runs in my family. Well, it was six years and ( I don't know why I stayed that long with him) and he never  told me to get my check up. A doctor has to prescribe it. I dropped him and got a new doctor, female, and she asked how long has it been? I told her and she said make the appointment now. I got my check up and they found another polyp. I felt like going to the doctor and shooting him. I was mad and upset. He was just going to let it go. I did complain and wrote a letter, I don't know if it did any good. He is still practicing his bigotry.

One of my transsexual friends started on her hormones by just walking into a birth control clinic which I thought was cool..
