Belief in persecution is a central part of the Gospel.
QuoteMATT 5.11-12 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:
Be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
So some people come to believe that if they have made everyone mad they are doing something right.
This became a problem for the Church in the 4th century after Constantine legalized the Church and the persecutions under Diocletian ended. Some Christians wanted to be martyred so badly they went out deliberately provoking others. Some even killed themselves while invoking persecution. The Church finally had to step in and tell everyone that martyrdom doesn't count if you deliberately provoke it.
Some bad ideas never die.
