"Transgender students should be able to choose which school bathrooms they want to use, says a new guide to help Alberta schools revise or hash out new policies to protect sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

The guidelines are expected to help Alberta's 61 school boards meet a March 31 deadline set by the education minister to come up with regulations to support gay-straight alliances and protect the rights of LGBTQ students and teachers. While the guidelines aren't binding, amendments to Alberta's School Act starting June 1, 2015, require school boards to address bullying with a student code of conduct, and create a safe learning environment that respects diversity."
