When/Did you experience hair loss on T? Advice?

I'm not that worried receding to a more male hairline. (I actually use to cut the hair to be less feminine)

What I don't want is for my hair to start coming out in clumps or get thin...

It's pretty scary for me to see trans guys who now have really thin hair, then others' with thick hair. How will it go for me? My hair is really important to me, but so is being happy... I'm 16, if I start to lose hair when I'm 35, I'd actually be okay with it because then at least I can look back and say I had my fun, you know? :( 'Cause I'm not having much fun...

I still like being quite androgynous, but I want to look like an androgynous GUY! I don't have body hair, which is annoying, and I'm probably only passing as a 12 year old boy...

Should I do anything to prevent hair loss as soon as I go on T? Rogaine? Does washing your hair too frequently pull out your hair? Some people say Argan oil shampoo helps?

SO sorry for this being really long, I'm just worried... I had a panic attack about how much I hated my lack of body hair and feminine body then about how I didn't want to lose my hair!

My hairline changed slightly very early on. I didn't catch it until I shaved my head before top surgery, so very subtle change.

I've been on T for over a year now with no signs of hair loss or thinning. I haven't changed anything about how I treat my hair either. Just regular shampoo, once a day. Conditioner every other day or so.

Probably the best indicator for hair is your own family. Is balding common in the men in your family on either side? I've heard that mom's side counts more in terms of hair genes, and in my own experience that is true. While all the men on my dad's side start balding fairly young, everyone on my mom's side has a full head of hair forever.

I'd also encourage looking into Biotin. I started taking it to help my body hair along, but I suppose it works for all kinds of hair. It promotes hair and nail growth. And since I'm a small furry animal, I imagine it works.

i don't think you'd start losing your hair at like 16 or 18 if you start testosterone, etc. it would happen when it normally happens in your family if baldness is an issue, pretty sure. i could be wrong but that would be ridiculous if it happened that way and i never heard of it happening that way. if you'd bald that young, it's genetic. i know a guy who was balding at 26ish. idk though, that is just my thoughts. i also heard if you look at the males on your moms side of the family, that is how it will go but idk how true that is either.

I do find this reassuring...

I think my dad started using rogaine at 48... But he's always had thin hair. (He's 52 now, and still has hair from what I can tell, he's been wearing a hat since before his hair got thinner) His brother has lost quite a bit of his hair, but his hair is completely grey and he's younger than my dad... Which is odd!

Me and my brother have thick hair, it seems we got it from our mother. I don't remember too much of her side of the family because we live with our dad, but from stalking her facebook her brothers still have hair. xD

I wash my hair with Garnier Color Shield shampoo and occasionally conditioner every other day. (I highlighted my hair then dyed it back so I wouldn't regret never doing it if my hair falls out on T lol)

I also find this reassuring.

Really, really, really hope that the story about inheriting hair from mother´s side is true.
The men on my father´s side of the family are all bald  :-\

Don´t have anything else to add, but I really empathize with the panicky feeling about no body hair in combination with loss of hair.

3+ years on T and I haven't had hair loss at all. I think my hairline may have changed - receded from the temples - but I can't say for sure because I didn't pay attention to it in the beginning. I just started wondering about it one day.

I just use whatever shampoo is the cheapest (because I'm a cheapskate) and sometimes even use shower gel or soap to wash it if I run out of shampoo. >_>

Might as well be true about getting the genes from one's mother's side of the family since my grandfather from the said side had a full head of hair when he died at 69 and the last time I saw them his brother and my grandmother's brothers had a good amount of hair as well.
Lucky me?

Our chromosomes are XX

We get an X from our mother and an X from our father.

Natal male's chromosomes are XY.

They get the X from their mother and the Y from their father.

The X is what carries the gene for hair loss.

Natal males can look to their mother's family for hair loss.  We cannot because we don't know which X is carrying it, if either.

At least this is is the thinking that made the most sense to me when I did my research on the subject of trans men and hair loss.  I am not a scientist.

You could consider going on Finasteride as soon as you go on T.  You need to start Finasteride prior to hair loss.  The thinking is that it only blocks the DHT on the head and not on the body.  Subsequently, the thinking is that this will not impact hair growth on other parts of the body (per my T doctor).  But, anecdotal evidence has not shown this to be the case (from my experience, hearing from others).

I was given a prescription for Finasteride, but decided against it.  I am also one of the unfortunate ones who hasn't gotten a ton of body hair on T yet.  I have a light coating on my belly, some under my chin, thick coating on calves, the hair on the upper thighs are pretty short, but a surprisingly decent mustache.  On the whole, not so stellar.  I am 13 months on full dose T, and 19 months on T.

P.S. I just remembered you are 16 years old.  Don't worry about it, you should have a long time before hair loss.

I haven't noticed much, but my fiance's hairline has changed quite a bit and said his hair is thinning--but how much of that is the T or stress, I don't know.

I started T at 30. My brother is a couple years younger than me and has been going bald since he was 18. So I was nervous about losing hair. My hairline has changed (at the temples it's a bit receded) but it is still thick and I don't yet have any baldness, really. I have only been on 2 years. The receding started at about 3 months on and stopped at about a year. It's been pretty unchanged since. While I'd prefer to not go bald, I have arrived at the point where it really doesn't bother me either way. If it happens it does, if it doesn't great. You can use rogaine or finasteride (as others have mentioned) but I did not want to take any chance of blocking DHT's affects in other areas. As was mentioned above, with us have 2 X chromosomes, it really is a roll of the dice on what you will end up with, unfortunately.

After 4 years on hormones my boyfriend still has not had hair loss even though his father is bald - his hair is as thick and beautiful as the day I met him! His hairline has become more male and square, but there's still just as much. I don't think that going on Rogaine immediately is necessary. When and if you begin to notice some thinning, then would be the time to start treatments. You're not going to wake up one morning with a bald spot. :)
