Hi ladies,

So if I understand correctly SRS is paid for by the state of California for residents who have lived there for at least a year. I am seriously contemplating moving to California and living there for a year as a resident in order to get free SRS. Is this a legitimate offer or what else would I need to do? Has anybody gone with this method?

Sounds interesting but I suspect, even if it is true, they would have safe guards in place and plenty of hoops to jump through otherwise every trans person in the US would be moving there for a free op.

I have lived in California for almost 30 years and I will have to pay for my own SRS through my insurance because I am employed. You are probably referring to MediCal, the state insurance plan for low income individuals. SRS is covered by MediCal.  One of the gals in a group I belong to had her SRS and breast augmentation proceedures recently approved through MediCal.

No it's not. Once diagnosed dysphoric, it's like not that expensive.

And medical said and I quote "we do not view transgender reassignment or gender dysphoria as a nessecary medical coverage so it is not covered under California funded medical insurance"

Unless things have changed that much since November 2015...

SRS and other medically necessary procedures are covered under Medi Cal.  If you were denied coverage under Medi Cal you need to appeal the denial. Other private insurers may or may not cover transition related procedures. I am covered by Anthem Blue Cross through my employer and SRS is covered.
