"A Western Australian man has told how he lost his liver after taking popular weight-loss products widely available in protein powders and supplements.

Key points:
•Mr Whitby needed an emergency liver transplant after taking supplements
•Doctors believe green tea extract is the most likely culprit for his liver failure
•The Therapeutic Goods Administration is investigating the case

Matthew Whitby was two weeks from death and needed an emergency liver transplant after taking a protein powder containing green tea extract and a supplement with garcinia cambogia — a tropical fruit used in weight-loss supplements."

Thanks for posting this Stephanie. On the surface it doesn't appear to be trans related but given many in our community are lured by the ideas of herbal supplements for "natural" HRT it is particularly relevant.  Some "HRT" herbals can be very detrimental to the liver (Black Cohosh for example) but this guy's unfortunate experience shows risks abound even for those deemed "safe".

I think it is a very pertinent article and no, I do not believe it 'goes after' those who use herbal extracts.

I think the comment:

Liver specialist Professor Gary Jeffrey works in the liver transplant centre of Western Australia and said doctors were seeing what they believe is more liver damage from herbal remedies and herbal extracts.

"We would during the year have one or two people with liver failure due to herbal remedies," he said.

Is pertinent. I thought Green Tea was safe! I enjoy it. I've read on this Forum that certain teas can enhance boob development. I know how desperate we can become and think that if there is info that tea from whatever makes your boobs grow then taking a concentrate of it would be a good idea.

It may well not be.

The article says green tea drunk as a tea is perfectly safe, it's green tree extract - which presumably is highly concentrated and the same as drinking a hundred cups of tea - which is possibly not that safe.

People have adverse reactions to prescription medicines as well.
Some of those disclaimers for them are like. WTF why would I risk trying it. No thanks.
Like when they ask you are you allergic to anything?
I say well so far from what I have ingested in my life I would have to say no.
Plus these stories are most never followed up on and it could turn out to be another cause
or combined cause.

As a rule, I really dislike taking any "health supplements" because there is no regulation on them. I have no idea what is really in them or the quality of the products or in their efficacy. My doctor recommended a few for me because I eat a vegan diet. One was green tea extract. I've had suspicions about the supplements I've been taking and I decided some time ago that when they run out, I'll not take them any more. The only real loss I've noticed (and my doctor as well) is lower levels of vitamin B and D. I get a booster shot for vitamin B and I'm trying to get a bit of sunshine and am drinking more almond milk for my vitamin D. Otherwise, all of the supplements are leaving my cabinet.

I've done the same with many of the other drugs I'm taking as well. Five years ago, I swept my cabinet and fridge clean of all the drugs I was taking for diabetes. I was in an abusive relationship, didn't realize what was going on, and decided that if I died, I didn't care. I went vegan (because that's all I could afford) and lost lots of weight. My glucose levels started to drop and I decided to starve the diabetes beast of anything it could make sugar out of. Since then, I've lost the abusive spouse, lost over a hundred pounds, and have educated myself on how to eat a balanced vegan diet. I do watch my carb intake and match it with being healthy and maintaining my weight. For the first time in my life, I can buy a size 8 jeans.

I don't encourage anyone with diabetes to do what I did but I do encourage everyone to consider going vegan. At the minimum, watch what you eat. Cut out all the simple carbs and limit the fat and carbs you eat to levels that can maintain your ideal weight.
