I hear that many doctors recommend to stop hrt before any Surgery but is ist really necessary? Just the thought of being again on Testosterone scares me to death. I'm totally irritated if I forget to take my hormones just one day but not taking them for 1 or 2 weeks would drive me totally crazy. I also don't understand why we need to stop hormones and woman who have their own estrogens aren't dropping like flies because of them.

The reason for being off hormones is blood clots. Oral tends to have a bit higher risk that the other ways of delivery but the doctors want to reduce the risk as much as possible It's best to ask your Endo if your surgeon doesn't normally work on TG patients but make sure you ask and you follow the doctors instructions.

It may be possible to remain on blockers up to the day of surgery which would prevent you from T exposure but again, discuss this with your doctors.

Most surgeties, if not all, require going off hormones at least a couple of weeks before the surgery date. This is to help with the anaesthesia and help prevent blood clotting, which can be extremely dangerous, post surgery.

If you have been taking Estrogen and anti androgens for longer than 6 months, it would probably take at least a month for your testicles to start producing testosterone again. I have stopped HRT two weeks before surgery and a week post op, three times thus far, and I did not experience any masculinizing effects.

If you are on hormone implants you'd not have to stop, but it seems not many people are.

You need for SRS with a certain surgeon you personally like the most. No exception for implants hrt, and he works with extremely qualified anesthesiologist, so there's no misinformation cause.


As for FFs and other less invasive surgery... IF! a surgeon has  well experienced anesthesiologist he/she can trust 100%, to do monitoring and prevention perfect, there's no reason for stopping HRT unless if a patient caries higher risks for possible complication themselves (heavy smoker, alcohol, overweight, etc...)

I always wondered about this recommendation.  For example, Dr. Ousterhout had me take prescription Vitamin K before surgery, and it helps with clotting.  It's late and I can't be bothered to check the mechanism when compared to Estradiol, though.
