I did my very first shot alone but as it is my first time I don't feel as if I got it in my muscle. I did it on my butt but just unsure.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Susan's.

I do the IM injections in my thigh. I have never done it in the butt. I was told to spread my hand and put the thumb on the hip bone and where the middle finger hits is the spot to inject in the butt.

There is a FTM section about half way down in community conversations including a section on testosterone. I will move this thread there but you may also follow the link to the area.

Hi there,

I've never done my shot in the butt. My doctor doesn't want people doing them there since it's very easy to hit a nerve, especially if you're doing it yourself. When I do it in the thigh, I usually don't feel anything until about 48 hours later, then there is some soreness. It should go away faster if you massage the injection site.

I have done mine on the backside for my entire time on T.

As long as you are injecting in the upper outer quadrant of whatever side you're injecting on, you should be fine. I usually have no pain after an injection (though rarely it can be sore for a day).  As long as you are using that quadrant, you should not have an issue getting it to the muscle. Though, even if it were not deep enough to be in the muscle (if the needle were too short or you have a lot of extra "fluff"), I don't think it would really be an issue. Some guys inject subcutaneously instead of IM (meaning it's beneath the skin but above the muscle) and seem to not see any difference in masculinization.

I have been injecting this way every week for over 2 years and my changes seem to be moving along fine. If you are concerned, perhaps you could call your doctor's office to see if the nurse could observe you the next time to ensure you are doing it correctly for your own peace of mind.

Good luck

Ahh...first time worries!!!  I think you probably did fine.  Did your doctor specify where on your body you would have the best results with your injections?  I have used my glutes, thighs, and upper arms, and all seem to work just fine.  As long as your needle is long enough and you do not have an extraordinary amount of fatty tissue to get through, I think it will be okay.  Some people even do injections right under the skin (subcutaneous), so be assured that it is fine.  You may want to look at some online tutorials about self-injecting if it might help your confidence, and next time you visit your doc maybe ask what they might recommend.

Regarding the headache...it may be the T, or it may be any number of other things such as dehydration, stress (did I waste my T by not doing my shot correctly? ???), hunger, eyestrain, etc.

Congrats on giving yourself your first shot. Surprisingly, my endo told me that many of the FTMs he sees do not do them on their own. I did my very first shot on my own at home. My original Dr told me what to do. He said that I had to do it myself because I'd be doing it for life. He also gave me pretty large needles to inject with. Said that if I didn't inject with this size and used smaller ones that I'd never want to ever use a normal size needle if I didn't have a choice. I had no issues doing my first shot and actually didn't feel it. I also did it correctly and quickly without flinching. Yay me! I use IM needles and they are pretty big but I have no issues using them. I ordered an entire box online for $20. :D box of 100.
