"A trans woman has said she was offered a job in KFC, but was sacked within an hour.

The woman, who was hired in the US state of Virginia, has said she was offered the job in KFC, but when the manager saw her driving licence which identified her as male, he let her go. "

So glad my state in Australia doesn't have gender markers or titles on our licences, that and the fact we have fairly robust anti-discrimination laws too.

Now I have 2 reasons not to eat at KFC

1. There food is bad for my health

2. Because of their mistreatment of her, I hope KFC files for bankruptcy

After I read the last part. I was thinking... Are they fundamentally incapable of thinking outside the box?
They declined hiring her based off of bathroom use.. That is the most insignificant thing to think of to not hire anyone. I would hope she files a lawsuit on them.

Unfortunately despite the various anti-discrimination laws that have been passed by the Federal and various state agencies, discrimination is still very much alive and well in various parts of the U.S.     It would be interesting to see what anti-discrimination laws are in effect in Virginia and what recourse she might be able to take against the restaurant

I live in Virginia and am told that we have nothing protecting us from being fired or denied housing. If this goes to court they might make more laws for trans protection.

Virginia is (still) a part of the U.S.

The U.S. Dept. of Justice maintains that discrimination against trans people constitutes gender discrimination under current civil rights laws. They have aggressively pursued cases like this one, and I fully expect this case will end up there as well.

Of course this policy will change if we get an anti-trans president, so for heaven's sake, VOTE!

I can confirm this. According to the Human Rights Campaign, Virginia only offers protection to state employees and those seeking jobs with the state government. So far as I can tell, trans Virginians can be fired from their jobs or denied employment, evicted from their homes or denied housing, and denied accommodations (Source: http://www.hrc.org/local-issues/virginia). People in my home state of Pennsylvania are largely in the same boat as those in VA (Source: http://www.hrc.org/local-issues/pennsylvania). Barring any action at the federal level, it's down to state legislatures to do the job that Washington can't or won't. So far as I can tell, VA may be trying to move in the opposite direction, but that's another topic for another thread.

I also wanted to remind those on this thread that laws are not just passed in Washington and of those that are, not all of them need the president if they have enough votes in Congress to override a veto. Be sure to know the races at the state, county, and local levels and vote for those who will defend your interests.

I was unaware of the US Department of Justice- so that means its national and not local? I'm sure the democrats will be more apt to be pro trans if they care at all. I'm definitely voting Democrat this time.

I have actually never voted for any local politicians. Only in the National ones in the past. On that thought I will start voting locally.

KFC fires manager for axing transgender help

"KFC franchisee policy bars discrimination on the basis of sexual identity or orientation

KFC fired a restaurant manager for terminating a worker upon discovery that she is transgender, Eater reported Tuesday.  Fast food worker Georgia Carter was hired by a Richmond, Virginia, KFC and axed almost immediately by the manager who instructed her not to report for training the following day.  Carter's driver's license identified her as male, the transgender woman told a local TV station Friday after she was terminated."

Not surprised they fired the manager. Virginia may suck, but major companies have to account for laws in every state. Gives me some hope that my company won't fire me when I transition if I stay in Virginia.

KFC did the only thing they could do. I think that public perception and pressure is finally on our side.

It gives me hope as well. I love Virginia and have lived here all my life. I hope people keep reporting discrimination and I have a GLBT friendly news reporter friend if I'm ever discriminated against I'll call her.

Yep, and it's pretty cool that KFC posted on Twitter about the incident and contacted Ms. Carter to offer her a job at any of their Richmond locations
