Hey guys, I'm Jesse, ftm, new to the forum, not exactly sure how it works, but here it goes. I've always had the problem of hating going to the doctor... did you? I know I have to, and I don't have medical insurance now since I am in graduate school, but this whole thing is becoming more and more of a priority. I knew it would eventually, so I wanted to know since I have nobody to talk to about these kinds of issues (except for a few people who try to understand), so I'm here now. Did anyone else have problems/was made uncomfortable about seeing doctors about this, and how did you overcome your fear of seeing your doctor/psychologist about T? I'm not sure if my school has a doctor about instances like this, probably so, but, well, you know. I absolutely hate the idea of talking with a psychologist about these issues. I know it's needed, but I find the thought of it so annoying. Anyone else?

Welcome to Susan's Place. I have had a fear of doctors dating back to about age 4. Mostly what it is when they get out the sharp things. I had to make a decision to control my fear because sharp things were the only way I could complete my transition. The fear is still there but by understanding what was more important to me, I was able to control my fear.

I think most people have difficulty getting started. I didn't tell my therapist who I was for the first year.

I pretty much refused to go to the doctor after puberty. It was pretty bad, but my school nurse and county health department were about all I needed to get through most sicknesses. I had to be bribed to go to a gynecologist once, and then I never went again.

I was pleasantly surprised by my experience with healthcare during transition. I have yet to encounter a bad doctor/nurse/facility. I did fire one therapist, but she wasn't willing to do things during the time frame I wanted them done in. Therapy seems to be hit or miss. Some people get a lot out of it and others don't. If you know yourself and know what you need, there are therapists out there who will work with you to minimize the amount of time you need to be in therapy.

I think it's pretty natural to be nervous about going to the doctor when you know you have a problem and need something from them. I just read as much as I could about the process and did research on T so that if I was asked any questions it would seem like I had done my homework.

Thanks everyone. I feel really alone, but my friends have known even before I told them and they're here for me now. Long distance friends, but still here, and a few acquaintance cool friends but nothing like deep conversation in real life, so I guess I need help! I can't even focus on my school work hardly, and I feel pretty old for a student. Turns out the doctor has a month long wait, sad about that, but yes I know it's what I need. Thanks for the help, you're all really nice here and I really appreciate it.

Funny thing about Doctors. The worse patient a Doctor has is another Doctor. And the most reluctant people to go to a Doctor is ... a Doctor.

I know from your post that you are feeling really lonely but there are lots of people here who like to talk. Both men and women. Some of them just won't shut up!! Looking at my post count I think I'm one of the bad ones!

So do post away and start asking questions, talk about yourself, hobbies, issues and make friends.
