Hey I'm hopefully going shopping for a sundress right away, and would like any bits of advice that people might have. This is my first formal departure from pants (I've worn costume dresses, but I was being silly)

Dresses are awesome, say your hung over and all fuzzy feeling no need to coordinate a outfit just pull a dress on. Throw on some glasses to cover the red eye and now everyone thinks you went and dress up nice but your just too tired for pants that day.

Gotta agree with Valwen, ahahaha.

I've tried on some dresses at fitting rooms and I'd advise to move around in it as best you can, to get an idea of how it feels when you walk.  Sit down if you can to see if you're comfortable with it, bend over like you're going to pick something up to get a feel for how much it might rise in the back and make sure you're comfortable with that also.

Personally I've always been a fan of dresses that flare out around you when you twirl  ;D

I'm concerned about my legs. Should I get some leggings? Is this a situation where tights could be called for?

I was concerned at first about my legs, like every other part of me. But eventually I accepted that I like the feeling of air on my legs. Now I have one dress and it twirls when I spin and shows of lots of leg as well as several knee length skirts most of which are swishy and flowing. Full time 9 months no pants and no real intention to get any.

I love swishy flowing and loose. Little skirt trick, if your hot just rock your hips back and forth and you create a breeze under your skirt. It's great when you work near a oven.

Dresses are the absolute best. I feel so free in them!
I mean I only have 3 that I wear.

You know that Marilyn Monroe song from Gentlmen Prefer Blonds... WELL! I edited that, lol remember 6 words I live by when dress shopping "Modesty is a girls best friend"

I like to find dresses that are at least 3-6 inches above my knees ^__^

And NEVER! I mean NEVER wear horizontal stripes, that will elongate your body width wise, if you must wear stripes, I say vertical, but stripes are a tricky thing :/ So if possible avoid them.
I say solid colour OR floral is best.

I have been advised to start out with solid colors and avoid prints.  Prints tend to get dated quickly and repetition would be noticed.  Solid muted colors, IMO, tend to blend in and are non-rememberable.  Since you are just starting to fill your closet, you might want to wear that one dress many times.

You only really need thick leggings if the dress is so short it might flash something ;) tights (like pantyhose) aren't very comfy in the summer... I'd go for a slightly longer length and skip the tights/leggings, especially if your summer will be hot

If you're self-conscious about your legs, maxi dresses and skirts are still fashionable and if the fabric is light and swirly they look pretty dramatic
