I wonder why people in the UK go abroad for SRS, when it is free here?

Are the surgeons bad here and so much better overseas?
Financially its better here, so why not do it here?

I cannot speak to the quality in the UK but I believe it may, at least in part, be the waiting list that drives people OS.

I can't speak as to why people don't choose to stay inside the UK for SRS. I was seriously considering doing mine outside my country until insurances started covering it. Hugs

I've read some people go because they think the surgeons are better overseas. Personally if I were in the UK I'd do the same.

I had mine done in the USA instead of Canada because of the super long waiting lists. So far 2 years and still waiting for an interview!!

I also had a wider choice of good surgeons as opposed to basically just the one in my part of the country. Only 2 surgeons for all of Canada! Ridiculous!!!

Well i got mine done in Canada and i had to wait about 5 months after i sent them all the papers. With the high rate of cancelation i finnaly had to wait only 3 months.

If the uk surgeons are new i can easily understand why peoples do travel. It's a major surgery and the post surgery must be well followed as well.

Also got mine done in Canada. Went by fast, only waited a few months. As far as I know, this is the case for most, if not, all girls these days. Despite there being only two doctors. But, we live in Quebec, where the doctors practice, so maybe that's the reason?

Is there anyone who lives in Europe who has experience of them?

From what I hear Bellinger is excellent a world leader and very experienced.

Time seems to be the single largest factor for people going outside of public healthcare systems, that and expierence. There are also marginally different techniques used and many prefer the Thai doctors due to their differences.

I don't know very much about UK but if I want to do it in my own country I will have to get an approval and it's not so easy. So many choose to do it overseas (in Thailand, for example) to avoid troubles. Another factor is technique, as Hikari said in her post.

I had a look at the results photo's on Dr Bellringers site and some reviews I found. Personally I don't think he compares well to others. Free would be the key advantage.

What part of the uk do you live for a waiting list of only 3 months? I have been told by the NHS in london (charring cross) that the waiting list is 18 months  for surgery.

I guess if you have the funds and want the best of the best, going abroad is the best. Personally when it comes to this stage for me I'd just have it done here in the UK. The fact it won't cost anything and the results seem decent enough is enough for me to be honest.

Same reasons some folks will go overseas or pay out of pocket here in the US even if their insurance might pay for it.

1) Shorter Wait -- In the US, Bowers (surgeon who accepts insurance) has a 2 year waiting list last I heard. I have heard that the wait is even worse under the UK NHS.

2) Choice of Surgeon -- I know a few folks who will only accept the Thai (Suporn) procedure. They do not want the method used by North American and European surgeons.

I might be wrong, but I think the waiting list in the west of England is only 3 months; at least that's what I was told by a Doctor.
