So, what's your favourite "read/watch this and you'll understand..."

I'm a huge believer in the power of media, so I've gotten into the habit of referring people to films, documentaries, books and stuff when I break the news to them that I'm a bit different.

My current favourites are "Transgeneration" from the Sundance channel and "Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She" from HBO. Unfortunately my family and relatives' attention span does not stretch far beyond film, so no books, and I've stuck to documentaries to keep the drama factor lower.

So how do/did you ease them into it, or was it more a question of "that's me, take it or leave it"...?

I'll just reiterate the usual.

One of the best general introductions:
True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism: For Families, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals (1996) - Mildred L. Brown * Amazon * WorldCat

This book from a mother's perspective may not be the best introduction, but it's available free online.
Mom, I Need To Be a Girl (1998) - Evelyn D. Lindenmuth * Amazon * WorldCat * Online * Out of Print

Thanks! I'll definitely add this to the handy "links and resources" section of the information pack, but the chances of most of my relatives and friends actually READING something are rather slim, unfortunately. If it doesn't allow your mind to unclutch, they're not interested, sadly.

Okay, they're not really that bad... not all of them...
