Transgender is an umbrella term, a lot of people that are transgender don't transition at all. A sub section of those are transsexuals and some of those transsexuals have surgeries.

So no, not neccessary

The transition is what you define it to be. If you need surgery to feel comfortable with yourself then yes. Many people on the site have altered their role in life without surgery and are perfectly happy and for them the answer is no.

To answer that question, you need to ask yourself what do I need to be happy and that will be your answer.

There is an entire non-op section here. All sorts of people decide not to have surgery for all sorts of reasons.

Most of the trans people I've met IRL are non-op.

Some trans people opt for surgery, some don't. There's also FFS, breast enhancement (top surgery), genital alignment surgery (GRS/SRS/bottom surgery), etc..

You don't need surgery to be trans though.

There is nothing saying a trans* person has to have surgery. Some don't and that is their choice. That said, at present most states will require some kind of surgery (Orchi, Vaginoplasty, etc...) and a name change to get your birth certificate changed and a few may still require it to change your ID. You can currently get a US Passport and Passport Card without surgery, which can be very helpful if your state requires surgery to change documents.

Of course not. Some ftms have top dysphoria so get top surgery and some don't; some have bottom dysphoria so get bottom surgery and some don't. Or you have others who don't want to risk the complications of surgery. It doesn't make you less of a man or not a man at all. Your brain is wired male so your male; your body doesn't matter.
In the past you had to have surgery in order to legally change your gender; which is still a requirement in many countries. Plus I believe that trans people in the past only had surgery because they were forced too or because they didn't want to risk violence and not being able to marry. It's simply not true anymore that to be trans you have to have HRT or surgery.

Not really... Some transgenders eventually have SRS to be the real "oneself" while others don't for various reasons. Those who decide not to have surgery are Non-OPs. It is "transsexual" that transitions.
