I literally just came out by e-mail to my mom. This is what I sent:

Hello Mom,

I have something very important and pressing that I wish to share with you.

Please accept me for who I truly am. Do not get angry at me for this! I still love you, but after many months of research and assessing my feelings, I have come to the conclusion that I am transgender. If you have any questions to ask me, ask later, you should let this sink in first.

I did girly things sometimes because I didn't want you to know this then.

As for my preferred name choice, I understand this will take some getting used to. I decided to go with something Russian. My chosen name is Dmitri, as I have always liked that name and it is easy to pronounce. Using masculine pronouns may not catch on anytime soon, so if you want you can use feminine pronouns for now.

If you decide to tell dad yourself, don't tell him while I'm in the same room, in case he loses his temper.

If you could reply as well, that would be great.

Remember, I still love you and always will.

Love you,

Dmitri

I hope everything goes over well with her, at least.

OMG things did not go as I had hoped. She said be yourself! She thinks I am trying to follow a trend of homosexual women changing their names! She just doesn't get it. This is me. I am Dmitri, and this isn't a trend, this is my life.

Sorry about that. Maybe send her links about being trans.
They/them pronouns preferred.

Your mum is just showing some resistance. My mum exausted every excuse under the sun before she accepted what I was saying. Give it some time, accepting someone as a different gender from what they know seems to be difficult for a lot of people.
