Hey,
Sorry if this isn't the right board (wasn't sure where to post as usual, haha)

I'm in the process of scheduling my (RFF) phallo, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Lately I've been having some worries about how everything feels (mentally) after bottom surgery since it seems like such a huge change compared to top surgery for me.

I had somewhat the same concern about top surgery but was fine afterwards, but I've been concerned that I won't be as happy with the change as I thought I'd be, etc, since going from having a vagina to a penis seems like such a big change to get used to; since (unlike breasts), I have to use it every day and can't really ignore that it's there and stuff- like it's something you'd get used to and then when it changes you have to wrap your head around it, etc.

Has anyone else had these concerns, and if so did you ever have second thoughts/have anything similar to dysphoria (but kind of reversed?) post-op or was it fine?

Sorry if this was an inappropriate question to ask; it's just been keeping me up at night and I wanted to get a second opinion :(

Hey there,

Unfortunately we don't have a lot of post-op guys who hang out here. I am a part of some support groups specifically for bottom surgery, and it seems like for most guys, it's a pretty natural change. Obviously logistically there's a bit to get used to, and anesthesia/surgery can cause depression, but it does seem that once the initial healing is done and guys are back home, mentally they're doing pretty well.

I've heard of people struggling mentally when they have complications and questioning whether or not specifics of the procedure were right for them, but it seems like once everything is settled, guys are happy. It is a big change for sure, but speaking for myself, I'd much rather risk the unknown than stay as is, knowing how unhappy I am now.

Oh, I see - thanks for telling me! I'm really relieved to hear it usually doesn't stick around for too long! Maybe I'll look around and try to get a therapist lined up for the recovery process just in case.
And that's a really good point! I never thought of it that way; I definitely feel the same haha.

Thanks a ton for your help, Max! I definitely feel a lot better now :)

Haven't had surgery yet, I'm in the same place as you but considering meta. Just want to say that if you have a good therapist, I would go to them before and after surgery. I'm seeing mine now and it's a big help to be able to just vent to someone who understands my mental state and can guide me through my decisions.

Anyway good luck! Same as the other guy said, seems like some guys have depression post-op but get used to the whole having a dick thing pretty fast haha. But then complications are a different story.

Thanks man! That's a great idea - sadly my favorite therapist (best one I've ever had, was like family) moved a few years ago, but I'll start the process of looking for one again!
I'm glad to know it's something you get used to relatively quickly. And yeah, the complications are a bit worrying, haha. Guess it's time for me to finally stop putting off getting back into shape just in case :P
Good luck to you too & hope everything goes well!

Thanks :)

And if you haven't already, definitely look into various groups like on yahoo and ->-bleeped-<- to see if you can find people who have shared their stories or will share. It's best to get and understanding of the process, physically and emotionally right from the horse's mouth.

Will do, thanks!! It's great that so many guys have shared their experiences, makes it a lot less scary haha.

Late answer but getting phalloplasty was the best thing I ever did. I thought having chest surgery had made a difference to me and my confidence but getting the phalloplasty- it was like wow this is what I should look like. I'm no longer bothered about going in showers or the bath I walk round in the house naked- it's just all so right!
