I've lived and worked in West Africa since 2010 - Senegal, then Cote d'Ivoire. Homophobia is vicious in many African countries, and too often codified into law. Although non-sexual expressions of homosexuality are not illegal in Cote d'Ivoire, being openly gay can really get you hurt. Transgender people are invisible in Senegal, where they risk being killed, and are treated miserably in Cote d'Ivoire. Not to resort to hyperbole, but treatment of gay and trans folk in much of Africa seems to me to amount to a crime against humanity. Sadly, some U.S. evangelical Christian personalities have offered African governments support and encouragement for homophobic policies. It ain't about toilet access here -- it's often about staying alive.
