Lisa, the sound isn't loud enough to be breaking the law, but it's just loud enough to wake people up. It's an annoyance, not a law-breaker, hence my inaction Meghan

Noise Limits
38370.  (a) The Department of Motor Vehicles shall not identify any new off-highway motor vehicle, which is subject to identification and which produces a maximum noise level that exceeds the following noise limit, at a distance of 50 feet from the centerline of travel, under test procedures established by the Department of the California Highway Patrol.


(1) Any such vehicle manufactured before January 1, 1973..........................................................92 dBA

(2) Any such vehicle manufactured on or after January 1, 1973, and before January 1, 1975...........88 dBA

(3) Any such vehicle manufactured on or after January 1, 1975, and before January 1, 1986...........86 dBA

(4) Any such vehicle manufactured on or after January 1, 1986....................................................82 dBA


The average noise level in Times Square is 90 dBA. Almost all custom mufflers do not meet the standard.

I've got the same thing in my neighborhood.  There is a law against modified exhaust systems in California.  If you pester the local cops enough, a cop will be close by when he starts his car and cite him with a fix-it ticket.  He'll have to correct it and present evidence prior to his court date.

Lol, ok, point taken, but I'm not going to be reporting my neighbors for loud mufflers, I don't need to be picking fights with them. Hey, I was just venting about the noise, but I see your point. Don't complain about it if you won't do anything about it Point taken there too Lisa!
